It just highlights once again the discrepancy between our expectations and definitions of 'boating' ... we all have individual ideas of what it means but there's room for us all I think. The one common element is that if you don't like something you can move away Rog

... definitions of 'boating' Im not sure how a definition of “boating” could be “moored with the engine running endlessly“. Surely the term matching that definition is “living in a power station”?

It just shows the enormity of the idiot problem that the 8 till 8 "rule" includes the words "this is not intended to prevent you moving your boat from the mooring". Or similar.
The fact you have to tell people that is mindbending.
I actually find the 8 o'clock thing is dodgy because a lot of people who do boating for that old fashioned reason "pleasure" are moored up in the afternoon and -in theory- enjoying the pleasant peace and quiet with some boats coming past and perhaps other people enjoying the same scenes.
Then someone starts an engine to charge up.
It really spoils a pleasant day.
And because there is the 8pm "rule" they feel fully entitled to run it until exactly 8 regardless of how inconsiderate it might be.
Ridiculous.
And yes, some "pleasure boaters" might fancy sleeping a little later than 8am rather than being woken up by a diesel drone.
It's just not a nice way to wake up. Not nice at all.

Me neither ... but you've introduced "moored with the engine running endlessly" ... not what I said. I'm still struggling with the concept that everyone not doing what you desire, demand, expect, dream of or hope for are inconsiderate ... perhaps they're just minding their own business and not getting all eggy about what others do. I of course realise, that situation may be difficult for you to grasp Rog

No because noise nuisance is a basic and well recognised problem in society.
If your neighbour was running his mower for 2 hours between 6 and 8pm I think you would have a valid complaint which could be taken up with the council.
Construction noise is another one. There are ways to get things rearranged.
But the drone of a diesel engine nearby on a boat which is not moving does not seem to be covered.
Well it probably is covered by the local authority but the next day the vessel might be in another borough anyway..

Fortunately some of us are tolerant of others and don't demand everyone lives how we say. I'm too busy enjoying boating to be too concerned what others do ... and if someone should do something I don't like I never complain, simply move. For the greater part of the year Telemachus will not be hearing boat engines or generators anyway ... Aberdeen's quite a way from the system. And on your residential boat in London @magnetman I would suspect the sounds of other boaters are the least of your problems. Live and let live ... and as the great Bard of Avon didn't say "Neither a curtain twitcher nor a nosy parker be " Rog

And on your residential boat in London @magnetman I would suspect the sounds of other boaters are the least of your problems. Rog It is amazing how wrong you are about that! It's a canal mooring not a marina mooring. Noise from boats moored opposite has been a very regular problem and often running well past 8pm the residents in the flats on the other hand all understand what they have and never cause any nuisance whatsoever. It's not in their interests... Boat engine noise nuisance has been by far the worst nuisance because it is right at your level and a real drone. I have unusually sensitive hearing and inability to cut out background noise which does make me susceptible to this type of nuisance. And when on the Thames you get people starting the engine at 8am. I do social distancing and tend to avoid these types of places but it is a problem and anyone who says it isn't is part of the problem. Of course people who wish to have high levels of "comfort" on their boats need to get electric from somewhere don't they. Oh well the upcoming big increase in cost of diesel might help sort it out

The noise in London generally drives me away after a few days ... not a peaceful place although a visit is great.
Mostly I cruise ... that's why I live on a boat mostly ... but sometimes I need to stay in one place for several days (London, Liverpool etc) at which point I run my engine whilst moored ... usually a couple of hours morning and an hour late afternoon.
If I can stay away from others I do ... that's my preference ... if not I usually speak to my stern end neighbour to explain and coordinate engine running to suit us both.
I find most boaters are considerate and friendly in the real world ... and if someone has duff batteries or simply wants to watch Eastenders I don't let it bother me.

I can just imagine phoning up the council to complain about this, I'm sure I'd get treated pleasantly. I'm just as sure that when the council employee put the phone down he/she would utter the word Twat!

About the neighbour who was running his lawn mower for two hours every day or the person making the complaint?
