You ... earn ... really ... do tell where the paper round is. Rog I believe MM's use of the word 'earn' could well have a fairly fluid definition....

Chestrfield canal 23.00 hours, moored up. Neighbour trying to sleep, aparently. I accept I was trying to moor for about 45 mins,it was dark, and it was shallow. There are few wild moorings, spent an hour aground, waiting for rain/tide! Need to look in weed hatch.................

I've come to the conclusion it's the Bridgewater canal that creates rude boaters wanting to speed around. None of them seem to slow down passing moored boats - now ok it's deepish but they still rattle around a fair bit.
NOT the hire boaters mind - they behave quite well but some of the old geezers seemed hell bent on racing around, pushing in queues and generally behaving selfishly. Anyway - we are up off the Weaver now and will head to Liverpool as planned - the next guest due Sunday has just cancelled and the one after the one after too - both of which I stupidly said I would refund if I could re-sell their trips as it's all "covid" related their insurances don't seem very willing to pay out... not looking promising though.

Your year sounds like it's a similar nightmare to mine. I wonder if you're anything like me; expect everything I try or touch to go wrong; if it doesn't; it's a pleasing bonus?

Have nearly always found hirers to be pleasant and they generally slow down when passing. Noticed several boat owners recently who seem to think they own the canal. Fat blokes ,with no shirts on, steering shiny boats with false rivets are the worst. Even had one ask if I’d mind moving my boat because he only comes out at weekends, apparently I had moored in his spot. When I refused, he said I was being selfish and had ruined his weekend. As they moved on his lovely wife told Ali that I was the type who is ruining the canals. Mad! Was also accused a few days ago of spreading covid. An elderly couple loooked at me like I was a child abuser when I said we were off too the pub. They told me that we should all stay at home. Not go shops often pub etc. When I asked how people will pay their bills if everyone did this, they said they manage on their pension and savings, so why can’t others. I pointed out that not all were so lucky. The elderly chap told me they scrimped and saved when they were young, and that’s what youngsters need to do now. I am getting increasingly annoyed with these type of people. Was going to move off today, but I’ve a feeling the guy who’s mooring I’m on will be passing later, hoping I’ve moved, so I’m going to stay put. Or does that sound like I’m turning into one of them? Oh god somebody shoot me if I am. Anyway, sorry to here of the cancellations. hope people come to their senses soon and realise they can’t hide away forever.

I thought Quaysider was heading south to where the canals are less likely to have stoppages and more customers, yet he's still farting about going to places like Liverpool, and on the dodgy Huddersfield Narrow with its shallow waters and booking Standedge. It is fair to refund deposits this year if Covid-19 is the reason given though, although I'd suggest that only for international visitors and not for people who reside in the UK - in that case, no show, no deposit back. It's supposed to be a business, not a charity.

Moored at Wheelock we were settled for the evening at about 6.30pm when there was a knock on the roof and a guy asked could we move our boat forward (there was about eight feet of space as the moored boat in front was shorter than the boat moored when we'd arrived the previous day) as his was 64 feet long and wouldn't quite fit into the boat length left after the previous occupier left. It was IMPERATIVE he moored there as he was doing a boat and car swap the next day. So of course I moved ... and then had to bang bank pins in because I was now the 'late arriver'. I'm willing to move for people of course ... but it is irritating when the request is purely to accommodate other peoples plans ... "you've ruined my weekend but I don't give a stuff about yours" kind of attitude. Stay where you are ianali if that's what you want ... first come first served surely This is another reason why I prefer to moor all alone. Rog

Hopefully this will cheer up any grumpy boaters. It's what the internet was made for.

I had one where I was moored in middle of nowhere upper Thames and sitting outside with my dog beside me.
Nobody about anywhere no path no livestock.
Boat comes and moors right in front of me woman came and said "can you put your dog on your boat please as we are letting our cat out".
No kidding. So I did put dog on boat, started engine and found another quiet spot further on away from the horribly rude idiots.
That's the worst one I've had so I've done alright really.
With any luck they got swarmed by wasps.

That reminds me @magnetman of once stopping for water on the Macc at Higher Poynton and our two German Shepherds were laid on the tow path as we did so. A bloke came up who was moored waiting for the tap, and said "can you put your dogs on the boat please" ... so I did, as I know some folks are scared of dogs. No sooner did I do so, than he let his two Yorkshire terriers off to run about yapping. I was annoyed and made my feelings known to which he responded "some people are scared of big dogs ... ours are only little". Of course I threw him and his dogs into the canal Rog
