I went through one of those shorter ones between Watford and Foxton..boat in front smallish day hire boat absolutely loaded with Blobbies..running very low in the water, they stopped dead in front of me and I had up to engage reverse rather quickly when I twigged no movement..they then crawled out and sort of came to a rest by the bank, waved us past saying they needed a 'cup of tea' to recover..... As for Braunstone..went through that so many times, hated it. Think most I met has been about 5 coming in opposite direction. Funny thing, the first time little sis didn't come through the tunnel cos son with me she was waiting t'other side just to check I'd made it ok

First hire boat trip.
August BH weekend - from Leighton through Blissworth and back in a 70 ft boat.
Entered tunnel, immediate shouts from Mr Annoyed/I've got an Historic boat to go faster - passed about 20 boats through the tunnel often having to come to a complete stop whilst boats in front of me sorted out how they would get past each other and exchanged insurance details all the time having to endure a continual barrage of advice and occasional abuse from Mr Annoyed who also hit our Stern button twice trying to move us on despite us telling him we were waiting for boats ahead to sort themselves out.
Got out the tunnel and turned around at the Gayton junction in preparation of heading back to Stoke Bruerne. Friend said she would steer the boat back through the tunnel as she could see how stressed I had become. Got to tunnel entrance I'm just opening a beer. Cry goes out THERE'S ANOTHER BOAT COMING!', full reverse engaged and we end up on the mud stuck fairly hard! I take over and eventually get us off the mud and through the tunnel for a well deserved beer (the one I opened before the tunnel got knocked over as we hit the mud).
I swore I'd never be back!

Was watching a YouTube video is standedge, that looks spooky. It's a bit strange when a train goes by. The vid I watched was a fella exploring an old railway tunnel that ran alongside it, guess an old one with no trains anymore, he was then going down the ducts linking the tunnels and showing the canal part..

There are three railway tunnels, two disused although they are kept maintained in case emergency vehicles need to use them. I believe a CRT vehicle also shadows convoys of boats using one, although I never saw this. There are cross-connecting passages between all four tunnels and on three occasions when going through the tunnel you have to stop at these passages so the CRT chaperone can telephone tunnel control to report progress.
