There was nothing sly I hope ... I was certainly intending recognition or where's the humour. I assumed (obviously wrongly) that as I'm the butt of everyone's jokes about wife beating and boat stealing, I am entitled to reciprocate. It's good that you occasional post here ... even if chastising me seems to be the only motivation. Still the best avatars. Rog ...and another sly dig, wreathed by the damning with faint praise. The "occasional post" will be considerably less you will be glad to know. Oi !!! if you get the hump with one poster that is not a reasonable excuse to deprive the rest of us of your input ...... so there !!!

Engines have played a huge part in my life. Was never a fan of diesels but since I began boating, they have grown on me. Right back when I was a young lad, I fell in love with the sound of engines. The sound of the then high revving Japanese screaming at the red line to the thump and rattled of Ducatiβs. Love them all. Even Harleyβs have their place. Will always be petrol for me, but yes, will b a sad day when they are no longer to be heard. I remember my first bike race at Cadwell Park, must have been early 70s. Amongst all the Japanese screamers were the MV Augusta's of Giacomo Agostini and Phil Reid. Never forgotten the sound of those engines. I envy you. Would have loved to have heard them. I missed that era by a few years. My loss.

As you're off cottaging in Wales your diplomacy will be sadly missed on the canals. I was curious how a single boat engine can cause you so much anxiety ... last I saw your boat you were moored in the noisiest mooring imaginable at Middlewich and surviving for quite some time there ? Rog Lorries hurtling past is kind of unpleasant but after a while, you get used to it. A monotone diesel engine in perpetual motion less than 10 feet away is a completely different matter. I'd imagine that waterboarding is worse, but not dramatically so. The thing is about this, systems are available to all to avoid having to impose oneself negatively upon other boaters. The systems are not particularly expensive. I have them, this proves this point. If you're going to spend a considerable amount of time out on the cut, why not avail yourself of said facilities, in order that everyone can have a nice peaceful time? I'm quite sure that the vast majority of people who regularly run their engines during the summer months don't intend to cause nuisance to others. But they do and if they thought a little more, they'd realise it. Calorifiers are great, 'free' hot water whilst underway. I like that. They are useless when not underway. Ask yourself, if you were to have a hot water system fitted at home would you go for a hot water cylinder and immersion heater, where most of the energy is wasted, or would you go for a modern gas combi boiler, that only uses the precise amount of energy required? It's high time that new boat build regulations departed from the nonsense that's the 'efficiency' of the engine and instead, mandated solar panels and instant gas water heaters. Far better to not have a diesel engine running at all rather than an 'efficient' one droning away for hours every day, releasing it's noise and air pollution into the atmosphere. I never run my engine between late October and the end of February. Not unless I'm cruising. It wouldn't take too much effort for everyone else to be the same and then, the canals would be much more enjoyable places to spend time on. clearly never driven a freezer/fridge lorry!!! devils work and the most unpopular vehicle in a lorry park Ask Vince

No patty ... don't say another word How's the doglet and what name did you settle on ? Rog Freya...and 'clever' son immediately said that it was a name connected to Friday....well she was not born on a Friday so thats OK cos she fits in with my policy of not getting stuff quite right. Its been about 17 years since I've had a puppy.....they r sooooooo hard work, add a 3 year old in the mix and its chaos She shouts all night so last night i slept downstairs to keep sshing her and she quietened..did have smelly blankets/fluffy toys etc stinking of mum and no doubt her siblings piddle but just had to wash them yesterday(they didn't help anyway) I will soldier on... Oh meant to add ....we now have Patty and Freya in the PatMobil.... ..once the rains drop I will be taking a pic
