Hi heading up to the Llangollen soon and just asking if I need to pre book passage through any locks to get onto the Llangollen or the Montgomery. I’ve had a look on the crt website and can’t find anything but I heard that you do. Thanks

Yes, Frankton Locks. Book it as early as possible as only a very limited number of boats are allowed on the Montgomery canal at any given time as it's a SSSI. Very beautiful canal.
Other general advice on the Llangollen is to think about what the hire boats are doing (takeover from base at the weekend, arrive Llangollen midweek, a day or two there then return) and go on the opposite cycle, this will save you a lot of time queueing at locks and make mooring in Llangollen easier. The cheeky bastards want £6 a night to moor in Llangollen but you do get free electric for that.

Thanks or the advice, I’m going to wait until after the kids have returned to school so hopefully it may be quieter.

Long queues at Grindley Brook, the lockie said that the second Saturday (or was it Sunday, can’t remember) in September was always the busiest day of the year because all the silver surfers came out with expectation that it would be quiet!

The cheeky bastards want £6 a night to moor in Llangollen but you do get free electric for that. We arrived at Christmas (2016) and were told the charge is only for Summer. There were just two boats in the parking place at the end - us and one other boat. ps - I thought the Welsh don't want visitors spreading their Coronavirus?

Think we may go up to Chester first then and down the Llangollen on the way back. 😉👍😁

Saw a post on fb the other day and when in poor weather there were 30 boats queuing on the Llangollen. Took 5 hours to get through. The locks.

We went up and back (when we should't have done) and all was fine - Last year was mid May and that was busy but fine too. Went down Frankton locks one day and back up the next booking the day before no problem. tbh, whilst the Monty is pretty, it's also pretty shallow and if wet and windy, not worth the effort of dragging your bum along the bottom - in nice weather, it's truly lovely.
We are currently heading our way back up there - pick a guest up on 3rd sept in Northwich and then wind our way to Llangollen for 13th I think - Still planning to go down the Monty as the guest wants to but not the prees branch... thats WAY too shallow just to turn around in the marina at the end and come back up again and certainly not worth the winding of the lift birdged.
fyi - it took 87 litres to go from venetion marina to llangollen and back.

As I've said before the way to avoid queueing at locks on the Llangollen Canal is to take note of what the hire boats are doing (starting off at base at the weekend, getting to Llangollen Tuesday/Wednesday then heading back to base Thursday) and work on the opposite cycle.
