Unless you completely change the way you use electric in winter I don't reckon covering the cabin top in solar will make a difference for "high comfort level" vessels.
I wouldn't be surprised if people tend to use more power in winter. It seems wrong because you don't need a fridge in winter but I bet people still use them.
I've seen large widebeams with what must be at least a couple of kilowatt of solar running engine to do whatever while not moving...

I don't get why all new houses are built with solar panels as standard, if the house is pointing the right way of course.. Presume you mean "aren't" No, I meant 'are not'

Sometimes I turn the fridge off in Winter and store food in the gas locker although it should be below 4 degrees celsius to do this. I've just bought a thermometer for the gas locker as I've never really been sure how long it spends at this temperature, I would imagine it requires for the canal itself to get down to this temperature. I also do buy some frozen pre-cooked food such as potato chips and figure that the extra cost of buying that is balanced by the saving on gas compared to cooking potato from raw .

My staple diet is pasta. I do occasionally eat potatoes but never the frozen ones.
I'm not convinced that a freezer is cheaper to run than cooking potatoes. Unless you eat a lot of potatoes.
As for a fridge I can keep things like sausages or fresh diced beef without issues any time of year for a day or two and I noticed that shops tend to have beer fridges.
My normal MO is shopping daily as I can't keep extra beer on the boat.
Yes this means in times of trouble I have nothing on the boat but that's better than having to run the engine when not moving.

That's fine ... but some of us move about and find ourselves nowhere near shops for a few days.
A fridge with a freezer box allows us to have upto seven days main meals on board.

Just running my engine on a visitor mooring to cook homemade chips, suspect it would be cheaper to go to the chippy 5 mins away but I like homemade chips and being self sufficient.

Rog Yes I move around as well (when my back is working). I have never had a week's worth of food in the boat. If you do enough hours you will usually find a shop. It depends how you like to do the boating and I understand some people like a higher level of luxury and to stop in areas where there really are no shops within walking distance, for a few days. I'm not bemoaning this fact. It's almost certain that my own way of doing things is the wrong way. I do realise this.

At this time of year I do my main shop once a week, because Morrison's at Binley is cheaper than the Co-op or the village shop which I pass on my way to work (and I'm cheap) so it makes sense to refrigerate/ freeze items so that they last a week. And because I work fairly long hours I can't be bothered with shopping every couple of days. I buy Polish beer, two crates at a time every three weeks or so, but this comes from an Asian-owned convenience store in an impoverished part of Coventry inhabited largely by unemployed alcoholics, where the prices are geared towards the means of the clientele, I've also arranged a further discount for this bulk purchase. It would make no financial sense to shop here more frequently as it's a 16 mile round trip in the car and fuel doesn't grow on trees.
