I’m just in the process of up dating mine to 2kw of panels I’m hoping I don’t have to do much generator running in winter. I keep looking at Sabina and trying to work out if I can do the same without compromising the usable deck area (at the moment there is 1Kw on wheelhouse roof and although in theory I could increase it by 50% it would block all the access needed for maintenance/repairs of nav equipment and lights.
My only real option is somewhere forward on the deck but that area is earmarked for a hiab.

Now, we just need to convince the marina dwellers in their flash boats that 'I don't like the look of them on my nice roof' is one argument, but the many in favour of solar panels easily override this single selfish one. What are you on about? Why would marina dwellers want solar when they can plug into the mains and how is that selfish?

-- ETA this slightly incongruent post was in response to a now deleted post by metanoia referring to growing your own greens and making your own bread -- Unsure why it was deleted. Maybe I imagined it. My I used to do both of those years ago, and flowers all over the top of the boat. Don't really eat bread these days but if kneaded I could do a good loaf. And no flowers but could raise a garden from seed if required to Apologies, @magnetman - I just realised/remembered that no-one really gives a sh*t - unless it's to take the p Hope you're feeling better today Still unsure. I can cook a loaf of bread and grow food, and I can also ride a horse. Strange but true and no p taking from me here No I'm feeling worse today actually because life is only bearable on codeine tablets and I hate medication...

Nine weeks of lock-down at Nantwich ...a unique and enforced experience, made me reconsider having solar of some kind.
Having looked again into the idea, I have now discovered that technology has progressed to a point at which quite small flexible panels (being very unobtrusive and discreet) can provide similar levels of solar power to the huge, rigid, tilting panels that look so clumsy and ugly in my view.
I am now considering a couple of flexi-panels with a view to covering the 12v fridge.
Of course my cruising pattern (covid 19 permitting) would tend to cover my hot water and power requirements, but on occasions in summer, it would be good to cast of the shackles of dictatorship imposed by 'the fridge'.

Rog I would do due diligence about flexible solar if I were you. Research via motorhome forums and that sort of thing. I have noticed a tendency for them to fail early. It seems to be to do with the expansion and cracks in the solder joints. And I have seen flexible solar panels in bins recently. Some of them might be perfectly good but there do seem to be some issues around.

there has been enormous improvements in both the solar technology and battery storage capacity over the last few years dogless

Indeed JohnV ... and slightly worrying that so many solar 'afficionados' are upgrading so swiftly. I'll spend the working weeks researching and see what's best. Rog

will do Andrew ...... it's this little one that is on the bow of "Alpha" at the moment. It's due for being changed for a much bigger one and I have first dibs on the original (and the engine driven pump/tank bits)

How pleasant Penny hydraulics swing lifts are ok but you can't beat a proper hydraulic jobbie. The real deal.

Can understand why you might now be considering solar, Rog - but unlike many you did have the option of going home instead of choosing to stay in the top two of your favourite towns whilst most of us were truly locked down without options... Happy cogitating while you're at home and plugged in eta - just KNOW where quaysider is likely to go with this ..!!

My only real option is somewhere forward on the deck but that area is earmarked for a hiab. oh, what kind of hiab? I’ve been trying to work out how to get 8panels 2.6kw of panel but I think I’ve accepted I’ll go with 6panels. I could physically fit more, but I want to keep some free roof space. Still 2kw is approximately three times the amount that I currently have.

Just running my engine on a visitor mooring to cook homemade chips, suspect it would be cheaper to go to the chippy 5 mins away but I like homemade chips and being self sufficient. I haven't had home made chips since...well since I was a kid I think, cos I never cooked them(bad mother/wife etc) Tempted..nah..I'd be mugged by the ever hungry starving hound.. Chips done and eaten. Now listening to a very pleasant 'Brass Band' outdoor practice. Trying to see if I can burp in time to the music!
This is the band I think.

Shopping usually every 2 days for me. My gas fridge is tiny, doesn't hold much stuff. I like to consume a bottle of red. If I bought 2 bottles I'd most likely drink them on consecutive evenings. Going shopping every 2 days, and just buying 1, enables me to moderate my probable alcoholism to a level where it's not healthy but, it's not overly dangerous either. Plus I've been on a fitness drive for a couple of years now, it seem counter intuitive to do daily exercise along with daily red wine partial oblivion.
I'm pleased to see that Dogless has seen the light regarding solar panels. He won't regret having some fitted, I've yet to speak to anyone who has.
