I thought one of the things that cart agreed to when they where formed was that they wouldn’t replace jobs with volunteers? That was then, and now is now. One of the most visible degradations in modern day society is that no organisation is any longer good to its word. They will sign up to things they don't want so they can get the job then use various spurious arguments to avoid their commitments. 'Context' is often used to justify this along with passage of time, a changed environment, an emergency etc. etc. The truth of course is that they never had any intention of honouring their commitments, rather, much of their effort from day one went towards manufacturing situations in which they might 'get away' with their dishonesty.

I might be wrong but I thought it was one of the articles of incorporation, which makes it a legal requirement.

I might be wrong but I thought it was one of the articles of incorporation, which makes it a legal requirement. Perhaps but a legal requirement is often no match for a cleverly worded and presented explanation why the law shouldn't apply, in this modern world.

Also signed for what it's worth ... however I understand that the petition is based solely on a conversation between a tunnel keeper and a passing boater ... it may not be accurate. However I am strongly against the principal of disposing of paid employment so that enthusiasts can take over for recreation ... I would like to say there is no way C&RT would do such a thing ... I would like to say Rog

If nobody volunteered to do it they wouldn’t be able to replace them! The problem these days, Is there’s loads out there who will step forward, hand up shouting ‘me sir, I’ll do it’. There is no solidarity any more.

There is no solidarity any more. I’ve had this conversation with volunteers before. “If you didn’t do it, someone would be getting paid to do it.” How long until supermarket tills are run by volunteers?

I have e mailed C&RT seeking confirmation one way or the other, regarding the issue.
The reply will be interesting.

This though, would be guaranteed a reply. Dear CRT I read with dismay that your organisation is considering replacing your paid staff at Harecastle Tunnel. If I may explain: I'm a single parent with 3 children at school. Life is one big struggle at the moment. The government's 'eat out to help out' scheme has been a great help but it ends next week. It shouldn't end, this is discriminating against me and my family. I can't cook so if the scheme ends I'll be forced into sending my children to the kebab shop instead. It's so expensive there and the owners, very unfairly, don't give any discounts to families such as mine. I hope that explains my situation, so you can understand how difficult life is for people like me. My little Johny, he's 9, his father is in prison, loves to chat to your staff at Harecastle Tunnel. A lot of people don't like my little Johny, they say he terrorises the neighbourhood. I think that's so unfair. OK, he's smashed a few car windows over the past few months but that's only when he's bored. And what kid wouldn't be bored during lockdown? Anyway, it's not his fault. I blame the government. I mean, what kind of government sends the father of a young lad to prison? Do they not care about families? I think it's disgusting. Anyway, if your kind people at Harecastle Tunnel are sacked Johny will have no one to talk to. I'm sure that CRT, as a respected organisation, wouldn't want to be responsible for sending my little Johny over the edge into having mental health issues. Yours

I have never failed to receive a reply from C&RT ... sometimes not the reply I hoped for ... but a reply notwithstanding.
