Hey Socks, I just noticed a shout you did days ago about having to get into the weed hatch and needing a shower afterwards. Looking at the awful state of the water in some canals I've seen, I got a pair of long gloves for about a tenner, for weed hatch duty. Apologies if you've already considered this idea, but I thought it might be worth mentioning. Its not very blokish of me I must admit, but it saves a fair bit of time and water not having to wash my arm off every time I clear the prop. www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B004ORX57K/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I have a pair of elephant vet gloves too. Right up to my armpit. I can reach the prop on the outboard with 1/2 inch to spare. If it's really blocked up I can tilt the outboard but I have to move the steel bump cage out of the way. Well I was worried I might catch a bit of ribbing for being a wimp and using gloves, but there you go- some of the old hands have them too!

A bump cage eh? You don't see them much I wonder why. Not many are as intelligent and skillful as wot I are. They don't know about badly steered toy trawlers etc, Captains grogged to the gills. Never know when Tim might pass either.

Weil's Disease - got a cut in your finger from pulling barbed wire off the propeller - English canals and rivers full of rats' piss. Covid-19 is one thing.... more hidden danger lurks in the water! What are the symptoms of Weil's disease? fever. chills. muscle aches. headaches. cough. nausea. vomiting. loss of appetite. a desire to get to the Grand Union Canal.

I'd wager a forest would provide more than 6 bags of logs. But that would mean doing it herself! ...although I don't think it's the logs that are crucial! I have both red n white vino..there are some essentials I do not run out of..... That said I had to offer son in law x 2 beers...social call to meet the blonde bombshell...she didn't bite him.... Before long I will need to restock....

They've been going on about Weil's disease since the 80s but I reckon it's a bit old fashioned now.

As for the toy trawler it's on aufppilot. Dodgy sensor issue. That's why it keeps going round in circles.

I've had more cuts and nicks in the last three days than the previous three years. I got a couple of additional bruises breaking into my own boat yesterday, because the stern door closed and locked in the wind, even though it was on the snip- thank God for the hopper windows that you can lift out.
In my defence, I will say that I only want to get to the GU so I can slow down a bit, set aside some work days, do a couple of boat jobs, and go fetch the car from Stretham up to Northampton, and get back to the boat again- without having to move on every 48 hours.

I also want to do bench plaques. I think it would be good to do bench plaques. I did a bench plaque for my dad on his birthday.... It said '80 awesome years'..it was very heavy, my son and i struggled to carry it down a field where we set it for dad to be able to rest before he walked his dog home. On the place where we set it on, my son had cut the grass..having dragged a lawnmower down the field. I tied balloons to the bench...helium with 80th birthday on them....My dad had been fibbing when he told us he always walked down his field every day so he didn't clock all our efforts till we escorted him .The next day he used a fork lift truck to move the bench back up near his house......I'd like to say "how we laughed'..but the bench was so b heavy I'd quite lost my sense of humour. However on a plus..its now mine its travelled with me to Horror House and now here, I've had to err sort of repair it so its now multishades of brown wood of different types...

I think I have an opposite malady, one that tends towards unjustified optimism! It's one thing to hear that boating is quite a physical lifestyle, but quite another to actually start it yourself. Even worse, I've neglected to train or do meaningful physical exercise in the last 12 months so even climbing on the roof wasn't as easy as I expected. But its all been good fun so far, apart from a couple of soakings- I'm getting some proper waterproofs in Peterborough in Monday. My centre line snapped off at the roof-edge cleat thing just as I was casting off to approach Denver Sluice, so I had to leap onto the roof pronto and tie what was left on it back onto the roof ring, before I missed my slot (I was the last boat through). Then I was nearly sunk by a well meaning helper in Marmonts Priory lock yesterday. Thankfully the most dangerous thing that happened today was stepping on a loose paving stone and getting badly sploshed. You just don't realise how soft house living with a car makes you- the furthest I've had to carry shopping in the last 20 years has been 100 yards to the car boot, and yesterday I had to carry it 500 yards- but it felt like a mile. All good fun! But phew....

Weil's Disease ....................... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz Foxy, have you checked out CWDF today (TB thread)........ Have not been to the coffin dodgers' site today. Have been building our 2nd wood cage, and re-gravelling the drive. Nothing on TV this evening so when we get home I'll upload the sunset to YouTube straight away. Tomorrow = wood cage, another 4 hours I reckon.

Wil anyone xeliver to a boat do you know? I had six bags of logs inside boat all summer, it's rapidly diminishing, but it's fun, just sitting here in the forest, seven miles from a supermarket : out of tonic, cheese and white wine, it's a hard life...... You don't need tonic. Just swig the gin straight from the bottle, works just as well. I usually do, but bought some special luminous lemon stuff [onoffer], and it's all but undrinkable....

I had a bucket of warm water with soap and disinfectant, paper towel then spray with Dettol ready antiseptic, I wore safety glasses as eyes are like an open invtation to nasties. I have Optrex eye wash, can be used to wash any wound.
