Dulcinea has an old autopilot on it. It's unlikely I will use it and quite probably not working correctly anyway. So I am going to convert the motor/belt drive system into a non-follow-up electric stick steering arrangement.
Basically you push the stick one way turns the helm then other way to turn it other way. The helm does not return to centre by itself. That would be a full-follow-up system which is more complicated.
What I need here is a on-off-on switch which returns to central position and has a long arm or one which can be easily lengthened.
Ideally the arm would be M6 studding then I can put a little threaded ball on the end.
Does anyone have any ideas where I could find such a switch? Happy with old gear off random machines.
It does need to return to centre on a spring so an indicator stalk isn't ideal.
I am also obviously putting a two button fob remote onto it but quite fancy the stick option as well.
Existing helm will be untouched. The belt drive is clutched in and out via a lever which is already there.

I'm a bit confused as to how that one works. It says two positions but if you want forward and reverse of a motor presumably need 3 positions ? Maybe I am missing something. It does look ideal.

Looks to me like a centre off with two sprung positions, as soon as you release it it returns to the centre off position.

Yes I think you are right.
It says two NO (normally open) positions so it must be a 3 position switch the middle one of which is off.
Thanks for that. I had not come across the term monolever before.

Contacts Will only be rated for about 5amp so you may need a couple of contactors/relays with it if needing high current. It would make an ideal bow thruster control

I put the clamp meter on the autopilot motor earlier on and it was less than an amp. It's a geared motor and not a particularly heavy load.
Obviously this load will be increased if doing large rudder adjustments but that won't happen.
The boat keeps a straight line no problem once set dead ahead on the wheel it doesn't wander at all but if there is a bend in the River of course a little helm is needed.
I can see this being quite a nice way to get away from the wheel.
A wireless two button remote is going to be a nice way to keep it all together while making tea or sitting at the chart table.
It's a lovely boat to steer but when I do long days like 12 or 15 hours the wheel does become a bit boring !
Always nice to have alternatives and I'm always within one or two metres of the wheel anyway so not a problem if reliability issues strike.
I suppose the falling asleep thing may be an issue due to less cerebrally demanding steering.
