Musical interlude Not the heavy metal rockers spanning three decades - but a pair of Pooleβs finest; a 40+ and a 40- Now before you ask; I havenβt had a severe blow to the head, @nemesis and @magnetman seem to have bad cases of Seagullitis -I definitely do not; I much prefer a good OMC two stroke, Yam of any description or a nice little Honda 4T. Why then do you have a brace of Seagulls hanging from the multipurpose activity centre? Well, to put it simply, a very good friend of mine is developing a severe case of Seagullitis, no matter how hard I tried I couldnβt help him to shake this seemingly incurable affliction. Only one thing for it, give the addict what he wants and hang the consequences. Both have issues, neither are seized, a coat of lacquer would preserve the bird shit and cobwebs for all eternity! They did however come at a very attractive price so are now hanging in my garage. Awaiting delivery to deepest darkest Wiltshire on an as yet undetermined weekend in October. I flatly refuse to lay a spanner on either of them, for fear of catching that most strange and nearly incurable diseases - Seagullitis ππ€¦πΌββοΈπ»ππ

Actually I was cured of seagullitis years ago. The seagull I do have is to be collected by @nemesis at some point. It was going to be last week but due to my back problem I was unable to get out of the boat.
Hopefully we'll be able to arrange another time.
In terms of outboards I am now seriously afflicted by electricalitis. So seriously that a couple of weeks ago I spent rather a lot of cash on an Aquamot electric outboard with two slot-in lithium battery packs. Which I am unable to use due to screwed back.
I did use it a few times before killing my back and it was very very good. The best dinghy outboard I have ever possessed by a long way and I have a Honda as well.
The quality of the Aquamot is outstanding it's built like a tank. A bit like a modern iteration of the seagull. Made to last or so it seems.

The Century looks nasty but there's potential in the Featherweight (nice fuel tank and driveshaft tube). Maybe experiment to see how fast the gearbox loses oil because it will or, if you have a micrometer, carefully measure for wear... ETA the other one isn't a century, its a 40+...chrome on brass exhaust tube...the featherweight has a aluminium substitute...yuk.

The outboard I bought is one of these It's an ugly thing but incredibly well built. They have since gone to an "Italian design house" to rearrange the aesthetics of it. This one will end up being a design classic. .. The new one is this, which looks a bit more normal but does not seem to have the quality to it. Might be ok to be fair.

Are they any better than a Torquedo?

One thing is it has a direct drive motor so no gearbox whine. I know torqeedo have recently gone for direct drive as well but until recently (when a couple of torqeedo people set up Epropulsion and made a direct drive unit) the torqeedos were small high rpm bldc motor with planetary gearbox and a patented propeller.
I've not actually used a torqeedo but this Aquamot seems much more durable. They are best known for larger drive pods so have a focus on heavy duty systems rather than leisure stuff. I particularly like the fact that the entire leg and motor housing is a single piece aluminium casting.
Torqeedo and epropulsion seem to be the most popular ones but I find them a bit untidy looking. This one while being a bit ugly is quite smooth with no external cables. The battery slides on in a similar way to a cordless drill battery. Quite good actually.
Although not advertised as useable with external batteries it would be incredibly simple just to clip crocodile clips onto the studs with the battery removed. It's a 48v setup 1.1kw so not very high amp draw.
Bit heath Robinson but perfectly ok for personal use.i've got two lithium batts with it which are good for about 5 miles each. It's only a tender so no intention to go particularly far.
Probably will put 4 golf cart batteries under the middle seat of dinghy as backup anyway.

Torqeedo equivalent (slightly more expensive) Pretty obvious that the leg and pod are separate on this one Same with the Epropulsion

Below is a pic of one that has had all the bird shit wiped off and given a little love. Well ok quite a lot actually. Be kind, the examples Gazza has are between fifty and seventy years old. It is remarkable that either of the two could credibly be made to serve again which is more than you can say for MM's latest toy. Also, British Seagull was the very last vestige of British engineering as-was to have survived when it too met its end in (I believe) 1993.

Have to agree Patty...π€ Tsk Tsk gurls huh, what are they like? Phil My brother once described a fork lift truck that dad owned as 'a thing of beauty' at time two men were crawling on the floor examining it... It was an American design..very old, made for the rough terrain and it had been constructed t'other way round...it ended up in a museum near Hinkley I believe.. I looked and looked again....nah could not quite see what they did... Sold in full working order but destined post sale to retire.
