I got the impression it was difficulty in passing a ring over the nut, so to speak. Perhaps a crowsfoot wrench on a 3/8 socket extension might work? A box spanner is considerably slimmer than a combination spanner - have a Google π

Not arguing with you on this one

I'll have a go at most things but I'm frightened of breaking the stud. That picture further up is correct apart from the nuts being much deeper than those shown. The nut is 12mm across the flats. The spanner I used might be a bit crappy but it wasn't damaged when I tried to undo the nut, it was the nut that was damaged. They are pretty pathetic though, 12mm spanners but if they were more 'manly' they wouldn't fit in there. Only 1 set of flats are accessible. If I was able to get it to move I'd probably have to turn the spanner to create a new angle, there wouldn't be room to get at the next set of flats otherwise. This is a full stainless steel exhaust system with titanium can. The can alone is over 300 quid. It's a very poor show. It's the cat that's in the way of the sump bolt. Why include a cat on when you don't have to? More is less, very often.
I'm going to tilt it over and get as much oil as I can out with the pump. If the bike falls on me it's OK, it only weighs 105 kilos.

Well, a bonehead appears to be having difficulty understanding what a engineering stud is like. In the old days a obstruction spanner looked like this: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-Williams-Superrench-obstruction-open-ended-spanners/324292198197?hash=item4b81523f35:g:O7gAAOSwo0RfDXrAOne of these is nearly indispensable when working on a certain brand of vintage outboard where the issue is very similar to the case in hand. However, a combination spanner used vertically with a lever of some sort in the ring often yields results.

You'll be happy to know I have never applied any tools to your Seagull Your links to "obstruction spanner" came up with a half moon spanner...

Its the accuracy of the spanner when manufactured that is the critical issue.Only 1 set of flats are accessible. I admire your doggedness and stoicism π I had to modify a combi spanner to get hold of a difficult to access bolt when I fitted the intercooler on the boat, hotting up and bending the spanner through 90 degrees with the open end held in the vice. Using a bar through the ring to hold it did the trick. There are often many ways to skin a cat, you just need a bit of inspiration and sometimes a good amount of lateral thinking π

No wait. Drill the sump plug. I've heard that's what racers do, right?

I'm amazed no one has picked up the O/P forΒ posting a wrong & misleading thread title during the 5 pages! Stubborn spelt incorrectly and it isn't a bolt but a nut that's actually being stubborn...
Title should of been 'Stubborn Nut' π
1/10 for effort π.
