My pet grumble is the timid boater that HAS to moor virtually touching another boat, rather than pick their own bit of isolation. I don't even mind if they only leave two or three boat lengths ... on a long, long stretch of piling with unrestricted mooring, there's no need to moor nose to tail. Rog Is it you magnetic personality, your dashing good looks, or the intoxicating pheromones you exude? Well put it like this, it doesn’t happen to me! How very astute of you ... yes you could be correct But equally you (I understand) tend to cruise for the day ... a more limited time journey e.g. your current trip up the Ashby in a week. We tend to cruise for a couple of hours and explore on foot at a slower pace e.g. we've been on the Macclesfield since the start of June. Perhaps it's not so significant to you, rather than not happening. Rog Of course you mustn't overlook the possibility of one more factor ........ Fear !!! ...... after all the sci fi on tv lately it could just be the sight of an unusually tall figure with an unusually large head is keeping people away

Well that didn’t take long, only been out an hour! Ascended Glascote, pulled in on the visitor mooring just past the boatyard to get some plastic off the prop. Set off, there were 4 boats tied up just ahead so it was at tickover after just a few seconds to get moving. Passed the first boat, it didn’t move. Passed the second boat, it didn’t move noticeably either, and was tied up reasonably well. As I passed there was some F-ing and blinding from inside, sounded like a domestic. Then chap in his 20s comes out the back and shouted “Next time SLOW DOWN”. Despite the fact that we were obviously doing under 2mph having only just set off, and barely making a ripple.
I was so gobsmacked that all I could think of to say was “ Fuck off”. His dad came out and berated us and I said same. He was a small rotund chap but nevertheless suggested we sort it out on the towpath. Although that idea seemed to wain when Jeff appeared from inside. These people just spoil the fun and peace. No wonder some people don’t bother to slow down - you are going to get shouted at anyway, so what’s the point?

Smile and wave Nick ... just smile and wave Rog I know, but that’s not my style! When I encounter a complete arsehole I feel it’s my civic duty to point it out to them. Jeff was pretty incensed and really really wanted us to stop and go back to ask them what the problem was. I resisted on the grounds that 1/ you can’t have a rational conversation with people like that and 2/ he has only just come out of jaw lockdown and fisticuffs would be inadvisable. But he is much more mentally delicate than I am, this sort of thing spoils his day so next time I’ll try your technique.

Rog My trouble is that I have too many hobbies, which in part stems from a working life as a pilot, only working 1/2 the year, not really a proper job. So only a certain amount of time available for boating. Which as you say means we tend to be on a journey. Although thinking about it, Jeff isn’t keen to spend a whole day tied up either, so it’s not just me.

Simply been too hot to be on board for us, so off wandering for the day is our chosen response. Much cloudier today thank goodness ... I enjoy the good weather but pleasant to have a reduction in the intensity for a bit Rog

Only 22C at atherstone, we’ve decided to go up the locks rather than wait for the cool of the evening.
