It must be hard for you young ones, having to work. I've retired but time now weighs heavily, I'm not enjoying my days but I'm aware only me can change things.

Glad you got the work you wanted/needed kris and thank you I must admit I'm enjoying mixing with colleagues and having a more rigid structure to life ... but I'm sure I'll be ready to retire again by January. Rog Yes I’m glad I’ve got some work, it’s not to bad four days on four days off and £11 an hr so I’ll stick it for a while. I’ve got a big old boat to support. I loved that shift pattern. One year I booked Easter Saturday and Sunday and had 12 days away from work for the price of 2! We used to do 2x 6am till 6pm days then immediately 2 X 6pm till 6am nights followed by your 4 days off, the first night was a bugger to acclimatise to but once you'd got through that you'd only got one nightshift left! When I took this job we did 4x 6-6 days only - they ended up canning it as too many didn't turn in when their shifts rolled through to the weekend. I never minded the 5 weekends when you would be doing at least one day of the weekend as it meant 3 full weekends on the trot you were not. Add in holiday and it was ideal - sadly I couldn't do it theses days due to school etc.

It must be hard for you young ones, having to work. I don't mind going to work to be honest. Of course, I need the money anyway but on the job I'm doing now, in a 12 hour shift I'll spend around 8 hours just waiting around for trailers to be loaded and just surfing the internet, like now for example. Plus, when I'm on the boat 24/7 and the fire is continuously lit a bag of coal will last two-and-a-half days, just having a fire in the evening, which will still just about be alight when I get up, a bag of coal lasts eight days, particularly if I supplement it with free pallet wood- I bring home a car boot full of wood every day, and I also built the moped shed and am building a coal store using it. Plus I only need to empty the bog once a fortnight instead of once a week. I have five years left until I reach retirement age, which for me will be 66, but if I'm still healthy enough to work then I probably will over the Winter.

I semi retired at 60 ish, cut back on my hours, even though it was work I enjoyed doing. I'm far from lazy now, just been doing a decor repair on one of our renters. Going to bridge hop the boat later this afternoon (it's legal, I have a home mooring😉) stay on it tonight, tomorrow I'll have another hour to do on the decor job. In essence though, I don't OF (😱 when in Rome😂) to work any more and I'm fit enough to enjoy life.

When the boats done then I’ll retire so I’m hoping by 55 to just be able to do what I want when I want.

Many people who know me consider I semi-retired aged 38, have rarely worked more than 4 months a year since (it did help being paid up to £700 a day). Sadly the money will run out soon so might have to go back to work for at least 6 months a year.

As Vince says working in the winter is good it gets you off the boat when all you would be doing is burning coal and eating food. So it probably won’t be as bad as you think.

It arrived at 8am ...a mere 18 hours after I ordered it. Very impressive service to be honest. Rog Sure foxy will be around soon telling us how he ordered one that arrived in only 14 hours! 🙄 " but I bought a new Fender amp " eh? why would I want a Fender amplifier? But I have just removed, washed, de-stoned and fitted back all 4 of our Summer wheels/tyres in 2 hours, that's not bad going. I like to check tyres every 3 months or so, and keep our wheels nice 'n' shiny.

I guess as others say working winter months wouldn't be so bad.
