Um, foam air filters should be oiled - Mr Honda has been doing this since the C50 Cub hit the road. To oil a filter you pop it in a sandwich bag, add a bit of clean engine oil, squeeze it about a bit. Remove filter from bag, squeeze out excess then fit. I have some particularly good Putoline foam filter oil that sticks like shit to a blanket - used to get through gallons of it when I was racing the dirt bikes. An oiled air filter will not cause you to have blue smoke or excessive oil consumption... Telemachus has already hit the nail on the head. kris, I’d be tempted to live with it till it irritates you or uses more oil than petrol - whichever comes first! It isn’t actually burning much oil, it ran out because I hadn’t checked it for a long while. Checking the air filter is a good call because I don’t think I ve ever actually had a look at it.

As Nick mentioned - they hold sod all in the first place (around 0.5l) I change both the Honda and the manky Clarke every 20-30 hours. Any oil ending in 30 will do. You can’t really over fill em either, fill to top of threads and let any excess drip out onto a catch pad. 100 hours as per manual is way to long for it to be in there in my opinion. I don't think Kris mentioned excessive oil loss. All the kipors do tend to drink a bit of oil, and my own use of one often shows the air filter gets quite a bit of oil from the crank breather. I tend to use k&n air filter oil on the foam ones I make, engine oil is a bit too thick. (Ex Benetton formula 1 gear box technician). 😉

Another thought kris - Honda recommend giving their Gennys a good hiding at maximum continuous rated output for at least half an hour. Long periods of Light loading never does them any good. I gave mine EU2000 a work out with a 400w halogen lamp and my 1200w lawnmower - neighbours thought we’d had the electricity cut off!

When it’s running it tends to run a 60amp battery charger which puts some load on it.

Is it using any oil? What colour smoke, blueish or blackish? It ran out of oil about three weeks ago. It’s got a sensor so it cuts out. To be fair I couldn’t say if it’s using the oil fast as I haven’t checked it for a good while. Anyway I topped it up and no bother, about the same time I had a problem with the eco mode switch sticking, I just wd40 it and it “worked” again. I’m going to replace it I think. I did think maybe I put to much oil in, it is one of those akward ones to check the level. But I checked it and it’s okay. The smoke is whitish/blueish by the way. To be honest I don’t think I’d buy another kipor, but I’ll keep this one running as long as I can.

My IG770 is still available at the bargain price of 80 quid. It doesn't smoke. Likely to be too low output for a 60A battery charger.

I did have an eu2000 Honda as well till it got nicked. The Honda was a heavy petrol user, and when converted to gas proved even more expensive to run. The bigger Honda's are much better, but in my own view, not much better than a kipor, especially when you take into account the money side.

Quick Google shows an average 60a 12v charger to be around 1000w - worth a check what you charger is and make up the difference, I read your first post properly second time around! Ig2600 = 0.6l oil and 2300w max continuous

I’m not sure new hondas are any better than the kipor but the build quality of the kipor compared to a Honda ex1000 I’ve got is rubbish. I really dislike having to take the whole thing to bits to change the pull chord for example. But yes it’s economical on fuel and not to noisey.

Actually now you mention it, I'm not sure if mine has one.

Actually it’s not the dismantling, it’s the putting it back together that takes two pairs of hands.
