KGH Suspended Staff Car parking charges end of March - today the trust have announced to staff that as a way of saying thank you they will continue the suspension until end of March 2021; for us that works out at an annual saving of £312 on a space that isn’t guaranteed to be there at 07:50 during the week, it’s not uncommon to have to pay the visitors car park day rate to get a space Glad to hear you might benefit in some way. It's a very sad world x Many years ago our local rag ran an article on patient car parking charges - they compared it to staff monthly car parking charges (worked out on pay band and vehicle CO2 emissions so the more you earn and the most polluting vehicles you drive pay the highest) Story went along the lines of why should the public pay over the odds (£5 a day sticks in mind) when the staff pay comparatively less - around £10 a month for a Band 2 HCA - I got into a spat with the editor as at the time their editorial offices were within walking distance of the hospital; I asked if it would be ok if my wife who worked in A&E used their car park for free just like he does, I got the sort of response Foxy might give when faced with an awkward direct question with little wriggle room!

Not for the first time naughtyfox you're wrong. Since the lottery started and churches have accepted financial help from Camelot, one of the conditions is that the churches must be open to the public. Difficult, because they rely on congregation volunteers to open and close, but necessary. I love visiting churches as historic buildings ... but they are also oases of peace and calm. Rog Actually most churches don't get funding from Camelot - many wouldn't accept the funding (but that is a different discussion). Most churches buildings are locked up for most of the time. Note the use of 'most' in my reply. The explanation was given to me at a number of churches around the country ... for years they were locked, and suddenly they began to open. Prior to this year we found almost all churches we visited were open, but covid has put an end to that. In the last month we did find the church on the hill at Napton was open. Rog

Some transport companies have now started to advertise "free car parking" as one of the perks of the job and these adverts are always treated with ridicule on TruckNet, much like "free uniform provided". You turn up on time for your shift, there's nowhere to park your car for free, you go home. When your employer phones to ask why you haven't showed up, you tell them where to send the taxi. And what time you want one to take you home. Simples. Well...I wonder what the NHS response would be to that. When I worked at KGH parking was a nightmare and tickets issued for anyone who didn't comply. I got one despite my parking permit in the window, I just couldn't find a space. It caused so much trouble amongst the staff with the night duty girls going out at 6am to move vehicles...in those days there was no charge for overnight in visitors. I think hospital trusts have treated staff very badly over car parking cos it aint cheap. If they've suspended during this time thats good.

Sadly it doesn't work like that - failure to deliver a trailer full of Chinese tat for the want of a free car parking space is one thing, not being able to provide healthcare has a bit more of an impact! Most staff are not wired like that either, no space in your permitted car park means having to pay in the patient car park - that's it. The thing that really pee's me off about parking at the Trust is the fact they outsourced parking administration meaning revenue no longer goes back into the hospital, along with the fact you have lost the trust parking staff that would have allowed Hospital staff to use the patient car park for free - simply by raising the barrier for them on production of their badge.

My visits to hospitals have been infrequent. There have been a number over the years though, visiting sick relatives. On each occasion (3 different hospitals) I've parked outside the hospital grounds and paid nothing. OK, at one hospital I was faced with a 15 minute walk as the streets around all had 'residents only' signs up. OK there might be some days when a 15 minute walk is a pain in the arse but in general, walking 30 minutes a day really isn't that bad for folk.
I'm wondering, are hospitals in different parts of the country different as regards parking restrictions in the area around hospitals?

One good thing about Finland - lots of free parking! Well, just a quick glance at the Daily Mail today - I see Boris's dad has been in a shop without a mask - two fingers up to his lying, cheating son! Gotta sharpen a couple of chainsaw chains now... long & complicated day tomorrow, ending with 3 hours to hang about waiting for the Witch to come back from Kokkola on the 1800 bus to Kannus, so I might as well go nuts in the forest, and fill up our trailer with the tree lengths already stacked awaiting removal. Called in early today - another driver sick - so was up at 0420.... and 0420 again for tomorrow. Unknown bus, unknown route - and in the dark (0615 departure). 3 years old flight deck

Unknown bus, unknown route - and in the dark (0615 departure). 3 years old flight deck I don’t believe you know what all those buttons do! There are a lot, and it would take ages to get to know one vehicle really well - but then you are thrown from one to another - one in for service, one broken down, etc. You are right, I don't know - and don't really care - about all the buttons I don't need. Even the gearsticks have different power settings - automatic but with all sorts of extras. Where the f is the heating, lighting, destination light, ticket machine electricity, how to adjust the poxy seat, how do the bloody wipers work, how do the driving lights work... digital tachograph, computer tablet ticketing + bank card machine + card reader... where's the 'day book', fuel, AdBlue, oil, coolant, tyres... how do the doors work?... and then there's the work itself, hunting for kids standing motionless in the dark, wearing dark clothes. I am compiling a list of the vehicles I am likely to be driving (around 20), and making my own notes so when I get in one I have some guide to go by. Chainsaw chains sharpened, alarm set for 0410. Luckily temperature around +6, no icy roads yet.
