wet or dry?
you will also need to record the humidity at the time of measurement, the tolerance in your measurement taking into account the calibration of your measuring device, and the tension applied to the string.
please repeat if these factors were not recorded at the time.
As you seem much more technically minded than me viz string length shall I post my balls to you for correct calibrationπ yes please. when I'm done I'll forward them to Trina for quality control inspection.

Unravelling a ball of string? Doh! Accurately weigh a given length, weigh ball, do sum.

On the subject of string, when I was tasked to clear my late auntβs home following her death I found two tin boxes, both containers string, one was neatly labelled stringβ, the other βBest Stringβ. No, I never figured out the difference.

No, I never figured out the difference. in my mum's case she would have used "string" to tie grease-proof paper over the top of a pudding bowl when making a suet pudding, or wrapping parcels and would have used "best string" when tying a joint of meat in a roll.
does that help to clarify your conundrum?

She also saved wrapping paper I had a daft aunt who sent us a parcel of home made jams for Xmas. 6 miniature glass jars wrapped in brown paper tied up with string. the postman handed over a dripping sticky brown mess full of broken glass and jam, bless him. these days it would have been junked by the post office at the first opportunity.
