I remember it being terrible but I have hypersensitive hearing so that probably accounts for it.
As for the DEFRA stove situation I'm not sure. Hobbit sounds slightly worrying but it might be fine.

That's good advice from @blacksheep in my view. I rarely single-hand, but when I have I learned the hard way it's important to be prepared to adjust plans and stop rather than try to force things. Strong gusty wind is a nightmare and can cause embarrassing loss of your boat Rog Strong gusty wind isn't the only thing that can cause a boater to lose his boat, eh Rog?

You'd think it fairly quiet these days, the M1, with everyone driving in electric vehicles which, with a touch of the brakes, actually produce all the electricity they need to buzz along. If you go really fast and brake hard, you can even sell some to the National Grid! Electric cars actually make more road noise than infernal combustion engine vehicles* *I made this up but I think it might be true due to weight issues.

F5 gusting to F8 should sort out whats left of the bow thruster thing nicely. Incidentally wind direction will be predominantly NNW.

Its surprising how much road noise is due to tyre friction. Cheap tyres are often way noisier than the budget option.

Yes and Tesla cars are heavy. Being probably the most common electric vehicles on motorways they may actually be contributing more noise than ordinary petrol and diesel vehicles.
Example
Tesla model 3 (yes it was meant to be the model E to fulfil the SEXY thing but Ford got in the way) is around 1700-1800kg.
Equivalent "conventional" vehicle would be around 10% lighter.

Strong gusty wind is a nightmare and can cause embarrassing loss of your boat Rog Thanks to CRTs rules I could stay put for a good while Rog, and I will admit its always tempting to do that, especially in a nice location with a full water tank and plenty of rations. I can see myself making week-long pauses in nice locations in the future, but at the moment there is an underlying pressure get up to cheshire before the winter closures start. I dont think there is one on the list that would stop me, but I'd rather not take a chance as the weather gets worse. And there is a the snag that I have to spend 4 days working next week, so cant cruise much at all. It's the idea of making some progress whilst I can, knowing I'll make none next week. So part of me is keen to get up the flight tomorrow whilst its relatively quiet, and before the weekend madness starts. I've never cruised in that kind of wind before though. Once I get in and commit to the flight, I sort of of have to do them all. Fingers crossed I guess..

Just so you know - you can moor between most of the locks if you need to. Not ideal moorings but safe enough, better to get up the flight but if needs must...

Its interesting that at a few hundred yards away from the M1, what you seem to hear is mostly wind-type noises. You dont really discern engine sounds as such.

I had issues being blown going through Braunston locks as did another boater..in fact we both ended up sideways across the canal but cannot remember which one of the locks it was... I thought it funny the other guy had sense of humour failure.. oh and if u decide to moor after Braunston the wind can do silly things along that stretch but cannot remember which bridge..just down from where little sis lives...something lane (Longsdowne?)..I had to run after my boat with my old dog tied up under the tiller...that wasn't so funny at the time. However enjoy, I know that stretch of the canal very well PS look out for the dog leg going thru tunnel I actually bought a worklight thing that I can position to illuminate from the stern forward along the starboard side of the boat, so hopefully the hull won't be too battered by the time I get through the tunnel. There's no way I'll be doing the Braunston flight tomorrow though. My plan is to moor somewhere after the tunnel, and do the braunston flight on Saturday morning. It could get very interesting as the wind will still be pretty gusty on Saturday, and there'll be a lot more boats knocking about, including a few newbie hire boaters I imagine. Hark at me talking about newbies already, when I've only been afloat for a month.... There is not a lot of mooring from the end of the tunnel to top lock..towpath in a pretty grim state(or was). I used to moor up near the first lock ..no signal.

Well, I'm planning to head off in about 10 minutes. Its 9am and not a boat has yet passed in either direction- and that hasn't happened once so far on the GU.
I can't say I fancy it very much with the strong wind and the chill, and it looks like nobody else fancies moving today, but we shall see...

The map indicates a few hundred yards, and if its full I'm stuffed, I'll have to up the Braunston flight this evening. I'll see what time it is when I get to the top of the buckby flight. I can always moor up short of the tunnel and nip through it first thing tomorrow morning.

Apparently the micro particles that tyres shed are one of the worst air pollutants, so itβs not all about what comes out of the exhaust. I wonder how electric cars are going to solve that one.
