Shiny boater: 

A newish boat. Shiny, obviously.

The boat only leaves the sanctuary of the marina occasionally and then, only in the summer, and when it's sunny.

The shiny boater does not own a generator, and looks down on those who do.

The shiny boater, despite having a top of the range boat doesn't have adequate systems to spend a few days along the canal. He or she will run their engine for hours so they can run their fridge and have a shower. If it gets a tad chilly the ebersplutterer is employed, regardless of whether they just moored with their back end right up against someone's bedroom.

The shiny boater will not expect to lower themselves to driving mooring pins into the earth. If there's a 'visitor mooring' nearby they will ask boats already moored there to move up, they will then moor on the end and fire up the ebersplutterer.

That's it, in a nutshell. 



 

I expect the police will become familiar with the process and arrest anybody who obstructs the process in much the same way that they support the actions of sheriffs of the high court (sometimes incorrectly referred to as bailiffs) who have powers to make peaceful entry and to seize goods under warrant (oh yes they do). Which is not nice but legal.

Its a good point though, I expect they can't make you give them permission to question your declared insurer, but they probably can refuse you a licence if you don't, in much the same way I don't have to have a direct debit for my phone but I'll be charged an extra fiver a month if I choose not to. It sucks balls but they all do it as I am sure you are aware.

I think we can summarise your definition of a shiny boater as someone who doesn’t think in exactly the same way as you, hold the same values as you and have roughly the same income as you. But since it is your definition of your term, you are of course fully entitled to it and CRT will be sending you a “Well done” letter for fomenting division within those they seek to subjugate.

At our marina, many boats never leave. The boats are lived in and the people on that side of the marina refer to themselves as “the council estate”. So it would be hard for me to consider them Shiny Boaters.

I can’t recall ever seeing anyone on the cut with branded deck shoes, but perhaps you are more vigilant than me and/or have a foot fetish?

I’ll give you the one about generators, but that surely is a good attribute?

As to causing a nuisance generating electrical power, scruffy boaters are surely the worst. They can only afford incredibly noisy frame generators, can’t afford new batteries but can afford some petrol out of their benefit money. They are too thick and high on weed to realise that the money they spend on fuel and engine wear and tear could easily buy some solar and decent batteries.

Some people don’t see the point of hammering in stakes unless it’s necessary. I wouldn’t relate that to shiny-ness or otherwise, just the application of a little common sense and being a little further removed from a cave man desire to bash things with a big hammer.

It’s not about no insurance why the focus on it? It isn’t on the statute books it in the liscence terms and conditions there’s a big difference

It’s not a done deal yet. I for one would not hand my boat over to cart on the outcome of an internal closed procedure with no form of appeals process.
If they take it to a court and have court papers that’s a different kettle of fish. But they are trying to give themselves the power to circumvent going into a court. Very dodgy behaviour indeed from a “well being”charity.
