Definitely worth avoiding celebrity status. It could turn you to drink - even if it's just a glass of water after the first three words !!

My guess would be that the front of the cottage was sledgehammered in by men in flat caps smoking roll-ups and not wearing hi-vis vests or safety shoes and then the front elevation was re-built largely using the reclaimed bricks with a few added from elsewhere, and that the void behind which was the living accommodation is still there and contains the remains of the door and windows and the lintels and anything else which needed disposing of by the navigation authority at the time.

...and anything else which needed disposing of by the navigation authority at the time. I had a look and there is a manhole cover on the top, among some small trees and other vegetation. One does wonder in one's idle moments if there may be something interesting beneath. Perhaps some remains of some TonyDunkley southern relatives ?

It starts at Limehouse / Regents canal dock. I've been intrigued about the Islington tunnel keepers house which is now gone completely. Someone on the canalworld thread on this pointed out it may have been proud of the wall so the house could have been removed quite easily rather than still being in place behind the current brickwork. I was thinking it had been bricked over but maybe not. And from the Google towpath crawler Nice to see the house though, isn't it. Will definitely bring the manhole keys up with me one day. Still worth a look.

I couldn't see any sign but I'm not very knowledgable about these things.

It doesn't look very sticky-outy in this picture But in this one it looks like it's just been peeled off the wall Curious Peeled of or bricked up.

I do think there is something behind the wall. Originally when I looked at it I was looking for window apertures but of course they are further out. There would be no windows on internal wall, obviously and quite probably just one door.
In the picture from the video there seems to be an outhouse to the side.
If the accomodation was simply for a tunnel keeper then it does seem possible that it was a very small dwelling. I also wonder if it was perhaps not actually a residence at all. Possibly just a toll office.. with room for tools and equipment associated with the steam tug.
I suppose the existence of an upstairs room with a window does imply a residential house.

How about downstairs a toll office and upstairs was a break room for local staff.

More from Google I wonder if the door to a back room was here ? Bricks look a bit odd. And on the top there are now some fairly young maple trees among which is where the manhole cover is located. Maybe that's a continued access for father Christmas.

to my eyes, it looks like the house only stuck out a couple of feet, piece of wood going from the house to the tunnel above the ladder gives you the idea of depth.
Also the bottom of the ladder looks like its sticking out abut the same as the house

That's what I thought originally. In which case the existing brick work would have been a full new course rather than filling in holes. Is the woman holding onto the bannister for the stairs?
