Like most boaters I see many shopping trolleys along the canal tow paths and in the Canals and I have come to believe that it is partially caused by boaters themselves. The supermarkets are also partly to blame having got clever, building lots if new shops close to the Canals for the increasing demand of boaters and now removing the pound coin deposit on trolleys.
Over the last four years or so I have witnessed an increasing number of people who bring their shopping trolleys to their boats and then leave them on the towpath and sail away. Then someone comes along and thinks it great fun to push it in the canal. There may be the odd idiot who wants to push an empty trolley from a supermarket to the canal and push it in but I believe these people mostly just take advantage of those trolleys already left by boaters.
The new craze of magnet fishing,(fun for the whole family) doesn't help either as they just dump the rubbish they find on the towpath ready for the next idiot to come along and throw it back in.
I am not accusing anyone, just merely an observation.

I usually bring the trolley to the boat if possible then I return it and throw a pound coin in the water to be a real rebel.
It gives me an enormous sense of satisfaction. I get to throw something of value in the water but the trolley is safely parked and will not be an obstruction or nuisance.
Win win situation.
As for the magnet fishing I stopped a few years ago once the idiots started turning up and it got popular. I never left rubbish on towpaths as I deliberately avoided bridges etc.
Too much rubbish on towpath. Bad.

On the subject of magnet fishing I can accept the odd person doing it but you actually see whole families out for the day. What do they think they are going to find of value? Or is there a points system for the most useless/largest/rustiest piece of crap you can haul out?

The boater/supermarket trolly thing is spot-on.
Last time we were at Brownsover there were four supermarket trollies left on the park side near the bin ... clearly boaters using them and then abandoning them.
But the condition of elsans and most rubbish disposal points are largely down to boaters too ... if we all took greater responsibility there'd be fewer occasions we encounter unsatisfactory conditions.

True.
And apparently when people have boats taken without permission it is often other boaters who are to blame.
It's a dog eat dog world at the end of the day.

We recently used the facilities at Peterborough and, to be honest, if it wasn't for the fact I had to use them, having 3 cassettes and 2 of them full, I would not have. I have to say they were in the most disgusting state you can imagine. The door could not be locked and whilst we were also filling with water a guy, who I have to say, looked like a refugee, came and stood by indicating he wanted to drink. We got talking to another boater who said that the refugees use the elsan as a toilet. We did fill a plastic bottle for the guy and he appeared very appreciative. There but for the grace of God I guess....

Some may say that that in that area, they should probably allow it to go off. Sort the scroates out.

I almost feel sorry for the new magnet fishers, as all the good stuff must have gone. Maybe I should start throwing in the odd bit of scrap, so they donβt go home disappointed?
