The boater/supermarket trolly thing is spot-on. Last time we were at Brownsover there were four supermarket trollies left on the park side near the bin ... clearly boaters using them and then abandoning them. But the condition of elsans and most rubbish disposal points are largely down to boaters too ... if we all took greater responsibility there'd be fewer occasions we encounter unsatisfactory conditions. Rog But you said elsans were great apart from less than 1%...I'm confused now.

Actually there are multiple layers of scrap in the cut. You can go back decade by decade it's quite interesting.
I once had 4 vespa type scooters out in the same place. The first one was ready to use and the last one was barely recognisable.
It is incredibly fascinating as a study of the modern 'canal fill' alternative to 'land fill" waste disposal.

Some may say that that in that area, they should probably allow it to go off. Sort the scroates out. Scrotes.

We recently used the facilities at Peterborough... whilst we were filling with water a guy, who I have to say, looked like a refugee, came and stood by indicating he wanted to drink..... I was at the Peterborough facilities about 4 weeks ago, and I definitely looked like a refugee. I dont remember asking for a drink, but I definitely cant rule it out...

I've never gotten the appeal of magnet fishing, I must say.
People's interests are of course an incredibly individual business, so that's not in any way an implied criticism. I watch some youtube videos that most normal people would find indescribably dull- so you know- glass houses and all that.
But still. it's interesting to ponder on the type of personality who can enjoy dredging scrap metal from canals. I guess it's similar to what motivates metal detectorists- finding odd scraps of the recent and distant past, objects which perhaps connect you in a physical way to that long gone reality, and the people who lived in it. Or maybe they're just all weirdos.

Yes it is rude. Very rude. At one stage these people were dealt with by karma but not sure if that still works.

Judging by our own resident magnet fisherman, I’d say they are all weirdos.

I was trawling the cut with a ridiculously large neodymium magnet before anyone else had even heard of neodymium magnets I've ended up with more old iron windlasses and boathooks than I know what to do with.

You must have all of the good stuff out now. You could get a ridiculously big electro magnet on the crane you have on the toy trawler, power it with your lifepo4’s.

, objects which perhaps connect you in a physical way to that long gone reality, and the people who lived in it. Occasionally, and I do remember the occasions, I have done time travel with the magnet. The best one was by lady capels bridge on the grand Union. I spent hours there chucking the magnet in, pulled out a couple of very old windlasses for my trouble and during my time there I was surrounded by horse drawn barges, the clatter of horses feet over the bridge and the chatter of boatmen. I was there and it was real. And I had not taken any drugs or alcohol. Bloody amazing that was.

Yes the old beam trawling magnet boat had occurred to me but my magnet fishing days are behind me now. I prefer to just do the boating, not that I can due to ill health at the moment.
