It looks like I am going to have to replace my very elderly and totally shagged out power plane.
I have been looking through the various types available and after rejecting the cheap as chips varieties and the gaggingly priced ones at the top. one has stood out.
The Clarke's contractors range CON950 model caught my eye ...... very powerful motor, bigger than the Makita and not far behind the De Walt. 50% cheaper than the Makita and a thumping £150 cheaper than the De Walt....... it also has a very wide planing width (110mm as opposed to the normal 82mm)
If anyone has any comments I would be interested but at the moment it looks like the front runner at £81.59 from Machine Mart

How easy are the blades to come by? Otherwise sounds fine.

To be honest I doubt it will be doing heavy work with me but there is always the errant nail in a re-purposed bit of timber that has escaped the intense scrute.

Clarke is just a brand name used by Machine Mart for re-badged Chinese shite. They have never ever sold anything worth having. If you look around on Ebay and Amazon you will find the exact same thing for less but with a different sticker.

as I said .... I left out the cheap as chips ones
Bosch used to be a good make ..... when they actually made them and not just re-badged

De Walt for me, 1500w. Can't fault it.

(I am unlikely to be buying any other battery tools as well equipped with both my Metabo heavy duty and a (surprisingly good) Ryobi with 2 x 6Ah batteries that the drydock gave me as a thankyou/Christmas box last year
If I was still running my company or working with wood frequently it would be a different matter (I used to be equipped mostly with Metabo tools) and incidentally, agree about the Pikey key (battery angle grinder) very handy tool but fortunately there are a couple at the drydock I can borrow if needed
Again, thanks for the suggestion but again it's a heck of a price for a tool that will very likely go into a cupboard after this job and not see the light of day for a long time.
I'm still of a mind to give the Clarke contractor range one a go.
Over the years I have had a few Clarke bits and pieces and I have always found them reasonable value for money.
Thankyou everyone that has made sensible solutions ...... I will have a little longer think before I jump

Looking at the specs of the Clarke, it doesn't look to bad. No doubt really easy to get parts such as blades, brushes and belts. As an occasional user, in your shoes I'd probably buy it.

I've heard tradesmen say they buy the cheap shit, use it to death then get a replacement under guarantee. If it gets nicked it's no great issue. I've got as set of Lidl Parkside kit for the boat, cheap and cheerful, seems solid enough for the use it gets, batteries are cheap too. Not seen a plane yet, but when I do...

For the amount you will be using it would it be more cost effective to hire one John?
