For the amount you will be using it would it be more cost effective to hire one John? good thought Duncan but I have usually found the condition of a lot of hire tools is pretty abysmal
however that might just be that I have been unfortunate in the past.
Big expensive stuff, cherry picker, scissor lifts etc that I have hired, was well maintained but ordinary tools ......
on the whole I think I would rather have my own, even if it is not of the finest quality

JohnV what are Metabo like? I'm in the market for a cordless angel grinder and I like light stuff so was considering this one www.ffx.co.uk/tools/product/Metabo-600348800-4061792174702-Powermaxx-Cc-12-Bl-12V-Cordless-Angle-Grinder-2X4.0AhIt takes 76mm discs. Not for anything particularly heavy the occasional use of a flap disc (you can get 75mm ones) and a cutting tool is handy to have. I just wonder if it is a proper item or a bit tinny. I've had Makita in the past but only second hand and the old 9.6v stuff is getting a bit long in the tooth now. On the boat a cordless grinder is definitely handy. I'd not be using it for anything big but occasional cleaning out of rust spots and dropping some paint on seems a sensible thing to be doing on Dulcinea.

I've had Makita in the past but only second hand and the old 9.6v stuff is getting a bit long in the tooth now. On the boat a cordless grinder is definitely handy. I had a pretty full set of Metabo tools when I had my company both corded and battery.
I had sterling service from all of them although many have now finally given up the ghost.
the 4.5" corded angle grinder died when it was dropped some 20 foot onto concrete but before that time it had lasted 5 or 6 years of commercial use.
My corded SDS drill although used extensively by myself and my guys for some 15 years was finally killed by someone who abused it to the "Nth" by using it with a 60mm holesaw to cut holes in lorry tyres so that they could be chained to a tug for fenders ....... no lubricant being used
My battery drills were used by all and sundry and the batteries had to be replaced after about 7 years of commercial use, both are still in existance although one is in bits (the screws that held the motor to the gearbox fell out and it has just been kept for spares for the second one) the remaining one is still in use although the batteries are starting to go (only still being usable due to the 10 minute charger) and I will still haul it out for any heavy work. The last big job it did was when I fitted the two cranes on deck ..... they are held to the bed by 8 25mm nuts and bolts and the drill on slow speed drove a 1" blacksmiths drill through 6mm angle iron !!!
I have a very high opinion of them, they are inclined to be a bit on the heavy side but I have found them extremely robust.
Now I am retired I find I cannot justify the expense of top quality tools and I would put Metabo in that category

One thing I have always wondered about.
Why is a hand plane called a "plane" but a powered one called a "planer" ?
Under the same logic a manual drill would be called a drill and the powered one would be called a driller.

That's interesting. Did someone say Machine Mart was going out of business ? Looking at the company directors most of them do have the name "Clarke" Machine Mart Ltd on gov companies House website: find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk/company/01555925/officersSo maybe they will be shutting down the outlets and going for the online model. Like so many other companies...

Clarke is just a brand name used by Machine Mart for re-badged Chinese shite. They have never ever sold anything worth having. If you look around on Ebay and Amazon you will find the exact same thing for less but with a different sticker. that is a total load of bollux ...... and as regards made in China ..... it virtually all is The Bosch I mentioned had a Made in Switzerland label stuck on it.

Yes but "made in xxxx" is a bit of a funny one isn't it. Every single component could be made in China but if the value of the combined components has been added in another country then it can be labelled as "made in". I believe that his includes the value added by branding. This could have changed at some point or be incorrect.

You will find that a lot of items supposedly "made" in a country simply have had the power lead attatched or some small final assembly to qualify for the label
Even items that are actually fully assembled in a country are made entirely with imported parts ...... an awful lot of it is just a big company scam
I see Andrew beat me to it

From Wikipedia. Swiss made. " For food products: 80% of the weight of the raw materials and the essential processing must take place in Switzerland. For industrial products: 60% of the manufacturing costs and the essential manufacturing step must occur in Switzerland. For services: the company headquarters and administration must be located in Switzerland." So presumably it is an industrial product so yes all parts probably made in China Quite funny really. It probably takes a lot more labour costs for a Swiss person to apply a sticker to the item than it does for a Chinese person to make the thing. So basically it's a screwed together (essential manufacturing step) and branded in Switzerland. All very silly really.

Well, yes, seeing is believing and I suppose one has to be actually at the site of manufacture. Still, I suppose the Swiss must do something occasionally. Anyone know what? Apart from hide valuable paintings and gold in their bank vaults for their German masters?

Did Clarke's ever sell their products via anyone else other than Machine Mart (which they own) ?
