An apostrophe can also indicate places where letters have been removed from a word. Or are you saying "fo'c'sle" isn't a word? Yes. I am a hardened fo'c'slist.

Well stone the crows..Email from my solicitor earlier. Abdul's solicitor has recovered sufficiently from his very sad double loss and has now got all the paperwork together. Now ready to exchange and complete in a couple of days. Given the way this year has been though it was never going to be that simple. Call from agent on Saturday evening, one of the boilers has broken down. Call to my gas man, he's decided to take 3 months off work. So I'm now at the mercy of the gas man of the agent, the former will probably charge what he wants, the latter will bang 50% on. I could of course do nothing, let the sale go through and Abdul would have to pay. Or sue me. That would be immoral though, so I'll sort and pay for it, even if the sale has completed by then.

Your argument wears thin when the shortened word is a word in its own right, eg to be found in a dictionary. Such as photo, disco, CD etc. There are no missing letters because these words are words in their own right.

Similarly my second sentence isn’t a sentence. I am such a rebel! IMO one is allowed to transcribe what might be considered verbal chat, into text, for the purposes of a forum such as this.

Cant u find another gas man?..down here people use the local FB and Ive managed to find some ace tradesmen through recommendations on there...You are then using people that other people have had good service from.

Also Mrs Tabby is arguing just for the sake of it.

Yes Patty I should do that. Problem is that tenant keeps an unauthorised dangerous looking dog and is at work most of the time. Every time work needs doing he's obstructive. By handing it over to the agent I avoid all the hassle. Not just to me, but to a tradesman I'd employ, which I'd feel bad about. So I'm afraid I'll just have to suck it up, accept being ripped off one final time.

When I needed a new EPC a couple of months ago I found my own guy via t'internet. 50 quid. Agent wanted 90. Three times he visited having made appointments and the bloke wasn't in. So in the end he had to drive there 4 times for 50 quid. I felt bad for him, wouldn't want to directly put someone else through it. So I'll cough up one final time, and move on.

£350 for a new boiler fan. Big slice going to the agent there given that they cost £150 and take half an hour to fit. Oh well, at least it's done now.

Takes 1/2 hour to fit, but the fitter has to diagnose the problem, identify the correct part, obtain it, fit it, check function and flue gasses using expensive tester. Probably the better part of 1/2 day’s work. £350 seems not too bad and better than the £200 I had to fork out for a new kitchen tap for my rental flat, which subsequently fell off a few weeks later due to being fitted completely incorrectly.

I wonder if Abdul is reading this. I think it would be fair to say that Pakistanis aren't the greatest consumers of all that is canals. Actually, I doubt that either this forum, or Analworld, has ever had a Pakistani contributer. On this basis I hazard that the chances of Abdul reading this are vanishingly small.
