Hi guys, I've pulled over northbound, just short of Great Haywood junction- I had thought the S+W was clear as far as the Shroppie, and I could get through there no probs, but a passing boater said its closing tomorrow at a lock thats on my route down the S+W- think he might have called it hack lock or something.
I cant see it on the list of closures- can anyone who is up to date and has five mins spare have a quick look and confirm whether or not the S+W is closing tomorrow- anywhere between Haywood junction and the Shroppie?
Many thanks folks

I'm pondering my exchange with the boater guy, and I'm wondering if he was trying to tell me that the Shroppie itself was closing- which it is at nantwich tomorrow, I believe. He said theyre putting a dam in, so it wont be a quck job

Contractors will be onsite to install the dams on Wednesday 21 October to assist with the repair of Lock 2, Hack Green on the Shropshire Union Canal.
The following daily operating times will be in effect until, and inclusive of, Tuesday 20 October:
10am – 3pm to facilitate passage through the lock (last passage at 2.30pm) Padlocks will then be placed on Lock 1 and 2 and navigation will remain closed until the repair to the cill liners at Lock 2 is complete.
We anticipate the repair will take 7 days and an update will be provided Wednesday 28 October.

Cheers Magnetman, that does ring a bell. Where is that roughly?
I'm pretty sure he was talking about the Shroppie being stopped near nantwich, which in itself is making me pause for thought. It could mean being stuck near nantwich for a couple of months, which is not ideal but also not a disaster to be fair.
I was just about to turn right down the S+W because I really like the sound of the Shroppie, but I'm now toying with the idea of carrying on up the T+M instead, as it might allow me to get further north, and might give me bit more cruising variety over the winter.
Decision time is now, unfortunately, I've just gone through the last lock approaching Gear Haywood.

Fantastic, thanks so much guys, thats really helpful.
If its only closed for a week or so, I'll carry on up the Shroppie, in finest Sid James style.
It'll take me a week to do half the Audlem flight anyway, at my pace.

That closure will give me an excuse to put my feet up for a few days, so not all bad at all.
In fact, that little quandary gave me an excuse for a brew as well.
Still, the S+W waits for no man- onward we go, so I'm off again in a mo.
Once again, thanks very much indeed for your advice and info chaps. I owe you a beer, if and when I cruise by your respective gaffs.

If you get stuck on the Staffs & Worcs, you can always take a train. Otherton Marina is not too far from Penkridge station (30min walk for me I think it was). Trains to Stafford, Crewe. Ashwood Marina also nice but that's past the Shroppie turning - nearest station Stourbridge Junction (Birmingham-Worcester railway). The Staffs & Worcs is not a canal to miss, the best stretch being between the Shroppie junction and Stourport. Lovely all the way. Ambridge Lock is haunted.
The Shroppie is also nice, but haunted by a screaming monkey.

Yes hack green lock is well down the Shroppie, past Audlem, and anyway you can always visit the Secret Bunker if you get stuck. And the Coole Pilote moorings just back from there are very pleasant.

Just stay in Audlem if you get stuck, three boozers and shops!
