You would have thought the covid 19 lockdown would have given the Trust an opportunity to take stock, perhaps look at how they could improve on their management of the canal system.
A chance to reconsider how they deal with maintenance.
A chance to rebuild the broken relationship they have developed with boat owners.
A chance to take stock of and address their spending.
A chance to plan on how they will work with the threat of continuing covid 19 restrictions. Etc etc Sadly, they did none of the above.
They instead used the time to further ridicule themselves by fiddling with the Licence structure, (that had already been fiddled with a couple of years ago) proving yet again that the Canal and River Trust has little regard or respect for its only paying customers. They didn’t even put it together with any sort of professionalism, one example being their reference to boat owners only using insurance companies that are governed by the “FCA”, when we all know the insurance companies are governed by The Prudential Regulatory Authority (PRA).
Their very own Head of Boating John Horsfall even waded in telling us in no uncertain terms that we were but a small income for the Trust. Well, news for you matey, as individuals we pay an awful lot towards the likes of you to basically screw things up in often spectacular fashion, and some of us are getting slightly peed off with your attitudes and stupidity.
2020 saw the Canal and River Trust spend millions on rebranding and a TV advertising campaign, which was almost immediately dwarfed and cancelled out by the incompetence that led to the Todbrook reservoir shambles. It didn’t stop there though; their CEO decided to be interviewed by the BBC and stated the Trust had more than enough funds for maintenance (even though he had spent the last 6 years telling us there was not enough funds, who the hell thought it was a good idea to let him out?). The Canal and River Trust then released a report on Todbrook to the public, which saw the majority redacted. It really is in my mind unbelievable how stupid this organisation can get at times.
All in all, we seem to have an organisation that lacks any sort of professionalism, integrity, common sense, or honesty.
For me, I think my funniest moment of the year was a member of the Trusts staff newspaper (The Source), posting publicly on Twitter and explaining to its staff, the difference between the use of there, and their when posting documents online. (Yep, it’s really that bad).

CRT reply received just today in response to an ongoing correspondence asking why my friend can't buy a pumpout card anywhere - they recommend their online shop - charging an extra £2.95 to post a card which fits in a standard envelope for 60p postage .... ALL their offices are closed. I have phoned 3 of their "stockists" who no longer have them nor intend to sell them ... Hi
Thank you so much for bearing with us.
The team have suggested you have a look through canalrivertrust.org.uk/enjoy-the-waterways/boating/boating-services/water-points-and-sewage-disposal which has a list of local shops in grey (closed offices are in blue), by region, which stock pump out cards. We would, however, suggest that you call ahead of going there, just to make sure they do have some in stock.
Unfortunately, we are unable to reconsider the postage as that is what it costs for us to send the items and, as a charitable organization, we are not able to shoulder that cost ourselves.
I hope you understand but do let us know if there is anything else that we can do for you.
Best wishes, Customer Service Advisor T 0303 040 4040 E customer.services@canalrivertrust.org.uk
I am still awaiting a reply from many weeks ago about the disgusting state and/or lack of bins...

The fact they cannot even carry out the most basic of their responsibilities serves only to emphasise what a complete sham organisation they are.

Covid has brought out the worst in many organisations, and top of the list are Government Departments and Local Government, closely followed by Banks and Insurance Companies. These are all undertakings we are unable to do without; they all have pretty well bombproof sources of finance and we have no real prospect of forcing any improvement. Anyone who thinks 'working from home' will ever be able to offer any reasonable levle of service needs to look at the fiascos created by third world call centres. Very few exist now, but don't be surprised to see them come back when employers realise we are accepting a derisory level of service.

From what I have seen, covid has bought out the best in companies, people rising to the challenge, sadly not clowns at CRT towers.

I was going to purchase a couple of cards to keep on the boat as there seem to be more pump out machines up north than we have round the midlands, but then I saw this video and thought nah!

In this day and age, I can't see why they are not connected directly to a card machine. Only needs a contact less point. Much like many pay and display machines.

I am still awaiting a reply from many weeks ago about the disgusting state and/or lack of bins... Out of interest I looked at the quoted web site to see where I could buy a card in Yorkshire. Every place is marked in blue meaning that they are closed. But then I noticed that the list was last updated on 1st June, when we were still in lockdown. It could be that these are still closed but highly unlikely.

From what I have seen, covid has bought out the best in companies, people rising to the challenge, sadly not clowns at CRT towers. In some companies, yes. It rankles with me that the NHS has become 'holier than thou' in many eyes, and whilst the front line staff deserve the accolades, the same cannot be said for the bloated bureaucratic mismanagement that could not organise PPE, could not balance the various facets of healthcare, shut down general practices. There are many others who get lumped in with key workers who have worked tirelessly like supermarket staff who have to put up with persistent offenders in the social distancing rules despite the risks. Bus drivers and lorry and delivery drivers, none of whom have an option of working from home, and are generally on low wages. In the meantime, civil servants and local government staff are getting full pay for a very tawdry service, insurance companies who weaselled their way out of refunds for travel insurance that became redundant, and banks who despite the increased commissions from increased card payments increased those rates to shops. Remember, We're all in it Together
