I thought the same thing Ricco tbh- only I thought that it was a wind-up, since obviously I'm not in handcuffs and neither is my boat. In fact I'm moored a couple of miles north of wolverhampton (ready to finally get onto the Shroppie some time tomorrow pm), in a location that is a little too rural and isolated even for me. If there are any axe murderers in Staffordshire, this is where they'll be looking. But its such sad news. I can understand that there are people who believe firmly enough in their principles that they will not take the easy route of obeying official bodies who they think are behaving incorrectly or in bad faith. For making that stand for his beliefs I have to admire Tony D, but sadly in so many cases these days the official bodies have the major legal and financial resources required to prevail against individuals who oppose them. That is truly a sight nobody wants to even see, let alone be part of. as he creeps through Pendeford Rockin tomorrow Forgot about that - sent Pirkko ahead to phone me to give the all clear. Tony needs to find someone to do the same. Or do it at night in the hope no-one else has the same idea?

Brewood is well worth a visit I don't know how things are in Covid times, but we went here twice, and recommend it: Lazy Days cafe in Brewood - English Breakfasts we had were good.

Tony is always going to be Tony, so no one would be able to get him to change his mind. Yes - respect where respect is due. Whatever one's personal opinion no-one can be considered wrong to make a stand for what they believe to be right and true. Pol Pot would agree with you.

I can understand that there are people who that they will not take the easy route of obeying official bodies "believe firmly enough in their principles" - did you mean 'believe in Acts of Parliament that govern the use of the navigable waterways'? "who they think are behaving incorrectly or in bad faith." - did you mean 'who are behaving incorrectly'? Tony has tried very hard to show folk what's going on - boaters getting shafted. It seems some like it up 'em. I'm not surprised in a country of people who are letting foreign governments run their railways, and having their economy ruined and National Debt risen to astronomical levels by scare tactics and 'lockdowns' founded on a virus that might, possibly be a slight inconvenience to 0.03% of the population. I absolutely do not want to denigrate Tony's moral or principled position Foxy, or to imply that it is based on some sort irrational individualistic cause- not at all. But I dont know any of the details or the background- only that he made a stand for what he believed was a fair and reasonable viewpoint. So I don't know what the facts are. For what its worth, I absolutely disagree with much of the BSS regulations, and the underlying principles that try to control aspects of a boating life that should be left up the individual to decide. So on that I think I would likely agree with Tony. I just dont know the facts of the case, so I cant try to make definitive statements.

if it was indeed exempt from the BSS requirements then almost by definition he cannot have been living on it. Eh? Why can't you live on a boat with no gas and no working engine? And no stove, I guess. I have slept in tents and survived. Yes, although it would be a fairly miserable existence, a person could survive living on a boat with no gas, working engine or stove. Equally, a boater could lie about not having any of these systems on their boat because they did not wish to pay the BSS examination fee. It was not unreasonable for CRT to want to ascertain which scenario was applicable in my opinion.

Still, best I have come up with is this, if CRT had issued Tony D with a Pleasure Boat Certificate, as, I believe, he is legally entitled to, then that would have been the end of the issue.

Well, as I pointed out above, the purpose of Boater 1's BSS examination is to protect Boater 2's life and boat from Boater 1's unsafe fuel and gas systems, not to protect Boater 1 from them.

As I said earlier today in my ramble about human nature and socialism affecting purely natural evolution, it's the humans with the biggest clubs and muscles who always win. They wiped out the Neanderthals. Nowadays they wear suits and ties - but they still have those big clubs hidden behind their backs.

However, all hail the Tricorn and Tony Hornblower as he creeps through Pendeford Rockin tomorrow to join the great Shropshire Union! You've made amazing progress and we wish you well - waterpoint, overflowing bins and a Morrisons at the junction, together with a great DIY/hardware/spares shop (Fram parts within hours). You should be fine tonight @tonyc - sounds like you're on the Coven heath (pikey and sewage alert but...) Brewood is well worth a visit as you pass through (butchers, bakers, shops and interesting architecture) but you'll probably be aiming for Wheaton Aston for cheap diesel - say hello to Stuart! Enjoy your journey. Met x Thanks Met. As my officially appointed canal tourism advisor (unpaid role, I'm afraid), I have a few key queries. 1. Is there a rule that you are supposed to walk to the far end before entering the Rockin, or do you just plough and fingers crossed? How do single handers do that? 2. Can you moor close to the Morrisons? I ask because I have an amazon thing to pick up there, but also I need a few essential shopping items. 3. Once I get onto the Shroppie, with the current closure ahead of me anyway, it is pipe and slippers time, so the butchers and bakers at Brewood will be getting a visit! 4. Re the sewage alert- I have very little sense of smell, but I thought I caught a certain unpleasant whiff as I moored earlier. Oh dear. I'm near to bridge 74 I think, but there is absolutely bugger all in any direction apart from a farmhouse maybe a third of a mile away. Hopefully not axe murderers in their spare time. If they are, there is also a prison about half a mile south, so the murderous swines wont get far. I should probably not dwell too much on those sorts of thoughts....

A tad reductive, I feel. But CRT didnae issue a certificate because they only issue licences...your turn.

Has there ever been a more perfectly named boat?
halcyon /ˈhalsɪən/ adjective denoting a period of time in the past that was idyllically happy and peaceful.
daze /deɪz/ noun a state of stunned confusion or bewilderment.

I’ve never been to that Morrisons but Jeff is of the opinion that it’s one of the worst. Only go there if you really need to!
