Thinking ahead to my move to Wales now. The house has tiled floors on the ground floor. As far as I know all the electrics run from the void between the ground floor and first floor. This will mean that there are wires running down, probably chased into the plaster, hopefully vertically and capped in some way, but who knows? Anyway, I want to fit a fireplace mantle and t.v. wall bracket and probably other things over time. I'm very nervous about drilling giving the likelihood of there being electrical wires in there. OK, I could look at where the sockets and light switches are and assume the wires are vertical of these but I don't want to trust to that. I've seen gadgets for sale that reveal if there are hidden electrical wires. Not expensive, 10-15 quid. Are these trustworthy, worth getting? Any recommendations?

Yes I think they are trustworthy. I have one, but use it mostly for finding the studs in partition walls for when I want to screw something heavy to the wall. Also for detecting water and gas pipes.
You can of course test it with a known cable.

As you are aware, best practise is to route cables in straight lines, horizontal and vertical. As for gadgets, I have used one to good effect and relied on them when working in my house , await others opinions

Just remembered when I moved into a previous house doing the very same job, fitting a mantelpiece. Right in the centre was an old rotten rubber insulated wire, live, a clock feed, from days of yore when such things were common. Very nearly sent a bolster chisel into it hacking off plaster to reveal the old stone lintel underneath.

I have owned 4 houses over 40 years and none of them had cables under the ground floor (apart from the incoming supply in the corner). All had cables lying in the ceiling space above the ground floor with upstairs light cables in the loft. So for downstairs sockets the cables drop reasonably vertically from the ceiling above. |
