This is news to me, that England is to go into a lockdown for a month. "it is expected pubs and restaurants will be closed for weeks – causing further damage to the hospitality industry. Schools are expected to remain open, but a source claimed to The Times that non-essential shops would shut and today, in similar scenes to the first wave in March, people were seen stocking up on toilet roll." "if they do another lockdown we're b**gered... we're bankrupting ourselves and as soon as the money goes we're plunged into long-term poverty." I find a sensible discussion site for real what's-going-on-really is www.railforums.co.uk www.railforums.co.uk/forums/covid-19-coronavirus-discussion.174/ Well, here's a new thread about how this new 'lockdown' will be affecting the waterways, so we can all keep up-to-date.

46,229 people have died of coronavirus in the UK. In a country with a population of 68,000,000 this means 0.00165%. To destroy the economy over such a tiny percentage is madness.

"Where are all the bio-chemical waste yellow bins to bin our masked that carry this deadly virus??"
"The talk of saving Christmas is meaningless if loads of people have lost their jobs, committed suicide etc."
"The country is run by rich people getting very close to guaranteed pensions. Why do they care if the poor die? They are just cattle after all."
"The joke is that they are allowing the schools and universities to continue, but look at the age groups with the most spread - basically, the steepest rises are in school and university age groups! You can't justify a lockdown based on the rises in those age groups but let them be exempt!"
"The Government restrictions/lockdown rules are always confusing, some nonsensical, never enforced, only the odd rule breaker is punished and never anyone in Government."
"They want you SO fatigued from all this that you squeal for the 'vaccine'."

How many would have died if the madness hadn't happened? I think you have to bear in mind that once there are more people needing hospital treatment than the NHS can tolerate, lots of people would die unnecessarily from non-CV causes.

Rog Nobody wants a lockdown Rog, but some accept it as necessary more than others. I have just come back from the supermarket - panic buying seems to be back in fashion.

a lot of people have been sensible and taken care, without being paranoid about it. If all had just been a little cautious and thought about others we would not need a heck of a lot of the restrictions that we have had. Unfortunately there are a large number of poeople* who basically don't give a shit about anyone else and ignore all sensible precautions. I'm not talking about people locking themselves away just not taking stupid, needless risks ...... but let's be honest there are a hell of a lot of tossers in this world
* or even people

All this talk of small business failures, job losses, financial ruin plays into the hands of the system.
I'm pretty sure that Life of Brian got it right years ago. It is the meek who are the problem!
Kill off small business, centralise it all and things will become better.
Why would you buy a book from a man with a shop a house and a mortgage for £7.99 when you could buy the same book for £5.75 from another man without a shop, who owns 1,000 houses with no mortgages and a superyacht?
I'm like "no way is this the wrong approach".

Here we go; From Robert Peston
These are the measures to be announced by Prime Minister Boris Johnson at his 5pm press conference, as I understand it. They will last until December 2.
And they are, in effect, a new "Tier 4" that will be imposed for a month initially to the whole of England - in a bid to curb a rise in coronavirus cases.
All pubs and restaurants are to close, though takeaways and deliveries will be permitted.
All non-essential retail will close, though supermarkets won't have to follow the Welsh example of fencing off non-essential goods.
There will be no mixing of people inside homes, except for childcare and other forms of support.
Manufacturing and construction will be encouraged to keep going.
Boris Johnson to hold press conference amid growing speculation over England lockdown Here's how Covid-19 is spreading across England Outbound international travel will be banned, except for work.
Travel within the UK will be discouraged, except for work.
Overnight stays away from home will be allowed only for work purposes,
Courts, schools, and universities will remain open.
Outdoor exercise and recreation will be encouraged.
Private prayer will continue in places of worship, but not services.
It all starts at one second past midnight on Thursday. The regulations will be published in Tuesday, and MPs will vote on them on Wednesday.
One source told me to consider the regulations as a Tier 4 for the whole of England.
After December 2, the exit strategy is that different parts of the country will then have their local economies and behaviour governed by the existing tiers, namely Tiers 1 to 3, depending on how serious the virus is in these respective places.

"It can't be about saving the NHS. If we don't have a healthy economy, we don't have an NHS."
"Lockdown is a middle class privilege - the shelf stackers, the lorry drivers, sewer workers, police, till workers, builders, cleaners all have to carry on working."
"It's time for us to stop being servants of the NHS and for the NHS to serve US"
