Once again my laptop has given up the ghost. They only seem to last a year or two, rubbish. I only need a laptop for simple tasks. Forums, bit of streaming, eBay, banking, that type of thing. Looking around for a new one it seems Android ones are much cheaper than Windows equivalents. I don't like Windows, always stealing my data doing updates that I can't control and don't need.
Would an Android one do the job? I just want something simple that doesn't constantly steal data, can connect with wifi and my dongle.

'always stealing my data doing updates that I can't control and don't need' They all do it, don't kid yourself that some don't. Ipad is up there but you pay, check out this link for cheaper refurbs. www.apple.com/uk/shop/refurbished/ipadAndriod is for kids and people who wear hemp clothes, cue somebody saying otherwise..

Sorry, I'm no techy as you know ... but Jane's Dell laptop is 12 years old and still operates ... I didn't realise that was unusual.
We both use Samsung tablets now as they're so quick and simple.
I'm sure a 'grown-up' will be along with good advice shortly.

It sounds as though a tablet would suit your needs. iPad is best but pricy, android tablets are ok if you are not too fussy! If you do decide to buy a laptop, be sure to get one with a solid state disk (SSD) as mechanical disk drives are just too slow for Windows these days. SSD a makes a massive difference to responsiveness.

Decent advice that, my gaming pc at home boots from SSD, it starts up and logs on in under 30 seconds.

I moved from windoze to Android 7 years ago, at present am running a Huawei 10"tablet and a Moto G8 phone. The joy is that both are identical so it doesn't matter which I pick up I have access to all my data. Wouldn't entertain Apple it's a rich man's plaything. Chromebooks will do what you need I prefer not having a physical keyboard so not for me. I still have a windoze 10 laptop with SSD but it spends most of the time in the cupboard only coming out to be the 3rd backup for my data/photos, the others being cloud storage.

Ricco has the 'Reverse Midas Touch' - everything he comes into contact with breaks, or is found to be wanting: surfboard - broke. boat engine - seized. cottage stove - eaten by mice. tenants - gun-wielding drug pushers. just waiting for the Barmouth earthquake.

Huawei and Andriod, cant get any more data mining than that.. I was trying to find my nephew in the States yesterday and came across the web site mylife.com . Scary stuff. Not only did it have a lot of info about individuals, it also has a reputation score! So it seems we will not just have to worry about credit scores in the future.
