Once again my laptop has given up the ghost. They only seem to last a year or two, rubbish. I only need a laptop for simple tasks. Forums, bit of streaming, eBay, banking, that type of thing. Looking around for a new one it seems Android ones are much cheaper than Windows equivalents. I don't like Windows, always stealing my data doing updates that I can't control and don't need. Would an Android one do the job? I just want something simple that doesn't constantly steal data, can connect with wifi and my dongle. Just mildly interested to know what 'given up the ghost' means precisely... I think in this context it probably means "fucked".

However it might be that the OS is corrupt, or that the HD is fried. In either case replacement is not particularly diffic. But if it fails to boot at all then 'fried' is probably accurate.

It's run out of space so when I could connect my dongle it was regularly downloading a large update that I don't need and stealing my data by doing so but not installing the update when it finished downloading it, because there wasn't room. Number 2 is a 2 in 1 that no longer recognises the keyboard bit so have to use it as a tablet, which I hate. The screen is cracked and it suffers from the same shortage of space as number 1. Also the Usb port seems worn so the dongle keeps disconnecting, even with brand new male sub parts. I cant connect with a hotspot from my phone with either machine. There's a strong signal, it seems to connect but both machines say 'no internet'.

I don't use computers any more but when I did I found quite a good, if rather technical, solution for a laptop type machine was to remove the hard drive and the battery, close the lid of the machine, line up a mooring pin on top and hammer it down into the ground.
This dealt with any uncertainties around whether is was a viable unit.
After this the battery was disposed of in a politically correct way and the hard drive was erased with a big magnet.
Then it all went in the bin.
Dealt with.

Take the drive out, buy a USB enclosure box, wipe / format the drive and you have spare storage. If you are careful with deleting old files you can keep those you need, photos, music etc.

Oi just has this do whatever Oi likes arrangement with some johhny who answers the phone and than use that as a router. Check with your network that you have the permissions to access the web. If they say there is a problem then smack those crazy fools upside the head. Start by freeing up space. Go to Control Panel and select 'programs and features' and, moving through the list, uninstall anything that looks like superfluous bollocks. Do not uninstall anything that you can not identify. Also locate the folders 'documents' 'pictures' 'videos' 'music' etc and delete any rubbish. What constitutes rubbish is a very subjective thing. Be careful. Hope that this has freed enough space top allow that dongle POS to complete whatever it is doing and finally connect to the interweb thingy. Download my favourite free utility 'CCleaner'. Run it. It will likely take a while. Also download and run 'Wise Free Registry Cleaner' and do likewise. This will also take a while. When finished re-boot and see if things are any better. Tell us about your experiences.

However I recommend taking generally more care with delicate and sensitive equipment which will significantly reduce the need for the type of percussive solution you describe. Hope this helps.

However, my carpentry skills have been complimented, even by those with far more skills than I have myself. I successfully recommissioned an engine that had been stuck on the rear deck for a while and my full boat repaint 2 years ago was a success. I'm currently contemplating adding the skills of heating engineer, roofer and chimney sweep to my growing portfolio. You're right though. I would rather pay my capital gains tax bill than attempt to fix anything technological. I'm sure there's logic hidden in there somewhere, but its not a form of it that I recognise.

Perhaps but I was thinking of it backwards as opposed to you - drive full, make space on drive, download ccleaner...I must try to be more logical.

And if that's the case (and buying new stuff is always more glamorous) I would suggest that since you now live on dry land you buy a desktop pc which are superior to laptops in every way but one - portability.

Having just done the same - dead laptop to desktop on a boat with a big screen I'm glad I did. Screen also gets used for TV occaisionally with a £25 ebay receiver. I finally got narked with tiny screens and fat finger typing.

I moved from windoze to Android 7 years ago, at present am running a Huawei 10"tablet and a Moto G8 phone. The joy is that both are identical so it doesn't matter which I pick up I have access to all my data. Wouldn't entertain Apple it's a rich man's plaything. Chromebooks will do what you need I prefer not having a physical keyboard so not for me. I still have a windoze 10 laptop with SSD but it spends most of the time in the cupboard only coming out to be the 3rd backup for my data/photos, the others being cloud storage. Hello Loddon, I too parted cash for a Huwei tablet, it is a nine months old and costs £20pcm, contract still has fifteen months to run. I suspect its not charging properly, in that it seems to take as long to charge than to discharge, I think its about four hours. If I use the radio while it is connected to a Usb, it does not seem to charge , well not much. It is possible the usb is not providing enough juice, how much output is required, there seem to be different outputs available. Also .... my laptop seems to be on last legs, how do I backup my spreadsheet? I have a dongle.
