I met Bush senior in 89 at the white House, shook is hand and had my foto took whilst doing it [checked my hand for fingers afterwards]. I was taking a piece of Nato crypto equipment for him to use, seemed a nice enough guy at the time. Bush senior was a pretty decent guy. Junior, on the other hand... The whole family are crooks IMO. Senior was just smarter.

Voting for third party liberal candidate Ralph Nader is what sucked enough votes from Al Gore to give us GW Bush. The rest is history... Do some research on Maine Governor republican Paul LePage. He's a total madman who was elected with only 38 percent of the vote because liberals split their votes between two liberal candidates (one from a third party). So a state with 62% liberal voters now has a raving mad reactionary as governor. Third parties just don't work well with our system of government. I don't know the ins and outs of the US voting but from what I know of UK voting patterns similar things are claimed when we get odd outcomes but the thing is that the flaw in that kind of argument is that it is assumed enough of those that voted for the "3rd party candidate" would have voted for the person that people think should have got voted in. We just do not know how they would have voted otherwise and statistically they probably would vote in much the same distribution the rest of the population did or perhaps not vote at all. Which probably means they outcome would have been much the same. If I was in the position of a US voter this time around I could not vote for either candidate it is just choosing between an evil of different flavours. If it was best not to vote for a 3rd part candidate I would not vote at all. I think one of the important issues with the US presidential voting system is the Electoral College system.

The election of Donald Trump was about Mr and Mrs America making their choice, just as Brexit was about Mr and Mrs UK making their choice. Both Brexit and Trump won their respective polls, and by definition the majority cannot be stupid/racist/xenophobic etc etc etc.
Blue collar workers aren't satisfied with the current political situation in either the UK or the US and as difficult as it may be for some folk to understand, in a democracy even blue collar workers have an equal say.

A very close family friend, a local councillor, was listening to another member of the local party ranting on about a newly selected election candidate.
"They're stupid" he said "and so is anyone who votes for them" Our friend turned and said "Everyone deserves suitable representation"
In our family it's known "Margaret's Law"

I think it all goes back to the point that most people who have the balls to be a leader need to be selfish, career driven, outspoken type individuals. You don't see many thoughful, kind, sensitive, types doing it because they would break down after 5 minutes. What is important is that leaders are prepared to listen and take advice from thoughful, kind, sensitive types. I'm not convinced Trump will. I think he's more likely to be dictator like in his approach, but we will have to wait and see.

I've just been reading about the protests that have been going on in the states.
I'm struggling to comprehend why people should protest the result of a democratic election.
Discuss, argue, debate, I can understand. The electoral college system is weird, but it always has been. The anomaly that more actual votes can be cast for a losing candidate only ever gets mentioned when the result goes in a way the individual didn't want.
I suppose it must be like slowly waking up after a boozey night, and with embarrassment, remembering what you did (so they tell me).

Rog I watched question time last night, had to turn it off in the end! The people apart from one were so anti Trump just a farce, just goes to show we had a lucky escape with yvette cooper an utter and total arse along with the SNP thing!! They had a rabid dog women from the american democrats she was off her trolley completely, the conservative MP spoke sense and the Republican lady was clever articulate and spoke sense. The reason you are seeing the Washington riots is because it is a very democratic stronghold, like the the remoaners they hope to change the will of the people. If you can watch it on catchup do but dont have anything heavy in your hand TVs are expensive

Anyone else think Trump looked a bit shocked and lost for words after his meeting with Obama? I think he got taken into a back room and told some shocking secrets.
