I need to do the stern deck on Dulcinea. It is a slightly unusual deck in that it has removeable panels so that the hull can be replated in future and for access to the water and diesel tanks if needed. These panels are bolted down onto sealant with the nuts welded on inside under the deck. It's all accessible inside as well if a bit tight. I could do with cleaning with flap discs then painting the whole lot with a really heavy duty paint of some sort. A job for next spring. Have come across this Corroless glass flake paint and wondered if that might be the right stuff for this job. www.arc-rite.co.uk/corroless-glass-reinforced-black-rustproofing-rust-killer-chassis-paint-choose-size-2167-pNot bothered if the bolt heads are covered as if and when I need to remove the deck plates I will be able to deal with that issue. The main thing is to get a thick, durable coating on the deck. There are no aesthetic considerations as it is a working deck like you would find on a trawler. Anyone used this glass flake stuff ? Jotun's also do it I think. Looks interesting.

That's funny timing for you to mention the Norton blaze.
I just noticed them yesterday while investigating strip wheels. Never come across them before.

Depending how thick the paint and rust (if any) is the Tercoo rotating blaster really shifts it. It doesnβt like bolt heads but cleaned up my decks which were checker plate and rusty quicker than anything else and left a finish like sand blasting. Used a flat finish deck paint as the stuff with sand in is impossible to keep clean, or at least I found it so.

Back to the glass flake paint .... I was intrigued by this stuff when I read that they are painting the Forth Bridge with it. Finally putting an end to the story of the never ending job of painting the Forth Bridge.
If you do use it, I for One would be very interested

Why don't you just undo the bolts before painting?

Why don't you just undo the bolts before painting? Because of the nuts are welded on Phil

I could take the bolts off upwards that is an option yes. And replace them even. They are stainless. The nuts are welded on underneath so you don't need two people to undo it.
The problem I could foresee doing that would be that then when the whole thing is painted some paint would end up in the bolt holes which would need to be reamed out again to put the bolts in.
The fact that the bolts are happy as they are encourages me to encapsulate them in a coating and worry about removal if and when the time comes.
At a later date it would be easier enough just to knock the correct size socket onto the bolt heads and undo them even if they are painted over.
I suppose technically I should undo all the bolts, remove the panels, reseal it all then bolt down with fibre washers under each bolt. Then paint around the bolts rather than over them.
That would be the best thing overall. But quite a big job.

When our boat was repainted everything that was bolted on was removed, the boat was painted then every hole was retapped and the parts refitted with new gaskets and stainless bolts. Where the item was going to be fitted on a non slip surface the surface was not applied for about 2cm around the item. It's the proper way to do it π·

That would also mean I could remove the deck plates to the river bank and clean /paint them off the boat.
They are designed to be lifted out of the boat by one or other of the Derrick cranes fitted to the radar arch.
It was made to be taken apart so I guess I should really do that at some point. During nice weather, and do the job properly.
