From memory Thorne Lock is limited to 61'8" for a widebeam any larger and you have to go the long way to get on and off the River Trentπ· That particular myth was dispelled long ago, . . round about, I think 2003-4, if I remember right. Back when BW had 3 x Bucket Dredgers regularly at work on the Trent with a fourth one either under repair or on standby at Newark, it was not unusual for Yorkshire Area to borrow one for a few weeks or months to keep on top of the worst, ie fastest silting up, spots on the Sheffield & South Yorkshire and the Aire and Calder. Having been last used at Kilnhurst, Trent dredger BD1 [68' loa with the buckets raised for travelling x 14' 6'' beam] was laid up at Swinton pending return to the Trent. The only tug available at the time was a small Bantam with a shagged out three cylinder Lister in it, so the usual route back to the Trent via the Ouse from Goole and round Trent Falls wasn't an attractive option. Despite BW's insistence that the dredger was not to be taken back via Keadby Cut because it was too big to pen at Thorne, it was taken back that way, . . . and it went through Thorne Lock with around 8'' to 9'' to spare.

Interesting, when I had Parglena lengthened in 2005 I did a lot of research into the length of Thorne just in case I ever went that way, and even speaking to people on the ground at the time I was told 61'8" was the max, so with the rudder folded flat thats what Parglena is. The fact that Parglena has not been North of Stoke Bruene is neither here nor there.

The churchyards around there are well populated with ex-boatmen who all knew how much spare length there is in Thorne Lock for a Sheffield size barge, . . . at 61' 6'' !

We were at Salterhebble Locks and a longer boat asked if we could wait for them to get in first - they went in and somehow got the back end in behind the one gate they hadn't opened - for if they had opened it, and gone in, they wouldn't have been able to close it for the length of the boat. This struck me as being seriously dangerous and stupid. OK - put it down as 'clever technique'. It's typical of the skinflint British approach to everything - save once, pay twice. Why weren't canal locks made big enough in the first place? Everyone shopping in Lidl and Aldi and wondering why the German Economy is doing so well. Duh. They were built to suit the boats, there's one in Elland, Hebble. Or t'other way round. Anyway you can replace the "British" with Yorkshire, long i'th pocket, short i'th arm over there. You've only to look at a generous Lancashire lock on the Rochdale, 13' 6" x 72'. What you were baffled by was the way to get a long boat through Salterhebble top lock, is backwards, get one end behind a bottom gate and go diagonally. Did you change your oil while you were waiting?

I was not baffled, just thought it fucking stupid and dangerous. Well, it's certainly not. As evidenced by the competent boaters who do manage it. Where is your evidence of dangerosity? How many documented or undocumented sinkings at Salterhebble , of maximum length going through diagonally? Possibly though, this is just an example of a febrile brained fox looking for something to grumble and troll about?
