Can't remember which member on here used to deal in magnets, are you out there?
I've raised the bed in my bedroom for storage underneath, all is good. The next job is to build some doors to cover the void. 2 x 1 with rebates created from 12mm quadrant then el cheapo b&q cladding infills is the easy solution. I did exactly this on 2 projects on my boat, worked out really well. There will be a single fixed panel at the end of the bed. The obvious solution for the sides is to have 2 pairs of doors on each side, all hinged. I could do this but it's awkward, not helped by the likelihood that nothing will be truly plum or square.
So... I had thoughts of having 2 pairs of doors each side but rather than faffing with hinged affairs, using velcro instead. There's a rebate, the doors would sit flush and look good. However, I'm not sure that velcro would last long, would probably fall off or wear out. So the idea came to me of using magnets glued to the doors, and washers screwed to the rebate for the magnets to be attracted to, so to speak.
My question to magnet man, or anyone else who knows about magnets: Bearing in mind that these doors will be relatively lightweight and will be sat upright with little or no pressure on the magnets: What size magnets do i need? I was thinking of 2 x 1mm of 15mm diameter on each door, might that do the job?

Clinton CoolDepending on depth of wood available the ideal solution would be to do a hole with a Forster bit and glue the magnet in the hole. Then a countersink washer for the other side. I've got quite a lot of surplus magnets lying about. Happy to send you some 16mmx16mm disc/rod magnets if you give me an address. They are strong little blighters so might be a bit over the top.

Cheers Andrew the doors only need the magnets so that they don't fall over but there's no great pressure to make them do this so I don't need strong magnets. Thanks for your king offer though

The kick boards on our galley cupboards had magnets holding them on, behind which were boxes/trays that slid out for storage Phil
