Engine control cables of that age are apt to fail (break) at any time without warning and are well overdue for routine replacement in any case. Replace both of them, with two new ones of the same spec. and lengths, . . but don't be tempted to keep the one that's still working OK as a standby spare, . . it's far too old to be reliable. If you want to carry a spare cable then buy three new ones, . . and if the existing cables are of different lengths, but of the same size and spec., then buy x 2 of the longer one and x 1 of the shorter one. Check the condition of the end fittings (clevises and pins, machine screws and nuts for clamps, washers and split pins, or spring clips etc.) before ordering the new cables and order at least one new set of four, if the existing ones are serviceable, and two new sets of four if they're not - one set to be fitted with the new cables, and the second set to carried as spares along with the new cable. Don't worry about adjusting the stuffing box packing follower for the moment if it's only grease that it's letting by and there's little or no water getting past it. If you don't already know this, it's best practice to operate the stern bearing/tube greaser whilst the shaft is turning, . . it helps to distribute the grease along the whole length of the tube much better than doing it with the shaft not turning, and helps to flush any dirt and grit out of the outer bush. I have been greasing the stuffing box all wrong, inevitably, lol. Re controls, cables, etc. I think best thing is to replace the lot and buy spares, bearing in mind I'm never going to be any more isolated than I am today. The new control levers look much smarter... so in my mind, it's an upgrade. Cost/benefit analysis =+ve The length of the cable should be printed on the outer casing, if it hasn't faded. If it is difficult to trace the cables all the way through you could be able to pull the new ones through by fastening them to the old ones and pulling them through. Have you managed to find a source for new cables? I am sure someone on here would be able to help with that.

I have Proof that a certain lady is more than capable of mechanical things... not piddly little half pint oil changes but big boy 8 litre ones.... Your boat must be frickin immaculate if oil changes are done wearing socks!

Can you change a wheel if you get a puncture, Patty? How about the light bulbs? Fuses? Do you know your tyre pressures, and do you ever check them yourself? Yes I can change a tyre should I need to though wheel nuts are a bit difficult to undo and tighten adequately so i do tend to get some help..now days there doesn't tend to be spare tyres in cars just that filler stuff..which yes I know what to do with that... Yes I can change fuses, rewire a plug Yes I always check my tyre pressures ..have done for years I changed fuses on the boat when I had it.. I may not be brilliant at DIY but I always try to have a go unless its something out of my range...eg what happened to the bathroom..and when they unpeeled that particular onion I was glad I hadn't had a go...I won't touch electrics other than fuses and plugs because thats just stupid. So just take your narrow minded stereotypical views and shove them where the sun don't shine..... Mrs Gazza can cope with most things daily life chucks at her - she’s ok with changing a wheel but I have said to her if she doesn’t feel safe or confident doing it at the side of the road to drive slowly on the rim to a place where it can be sorted without risk to life and limb - she’s been about a good while now and I’ve grown rather fond of her! I’d rather replace a tyre and rim than her ❤️🤪 I do wonder if she mostly keeps me about for getting tight lids of jars tbh! 🙈

Extends to half a metre, makes life a bit easier.

I reckon patty would give it a go. There are many people around that lack the skill to do such things, gender is irrelevant. Rubbish. Airline pilots, train drivers, miners, butchers - nearly all men. Women do not care for mechanical things. They prefer going into nursing and teaching (eh, girls?). You've not worked in engineering have you? It's stuffed with women, I've worked with loads and it's been better and more productive than working with some hard nosed bloke who's more concerned about exposing others weaknesses than getting the job done. I know a full time lady car mechanic a full time lady plumber and a full time lady M1? person that would break into your house and search it without a warrant and shoot you if it came to it. You've been meeting some rather dull women I think. Who made the tanks, shells etc for both sides in the war? Women!

The worst engineers I’ve ever worked with or under are the ones that won’t share their (limited) knowledge or are unwilling to help to further others for fear of being shown to come up short - without exception they have always been men, always been of a certain age (thankfully mostly retired or retiring now!) and always best chalked off as the totally inept arseholes that are not worth wasting a thought over 👌🍻 That said; on the women front I’ve known a couple I wouldn’t dare arm wrestle 🙈🤪

I'm relieved we have decided that women arn't quite as useless as Foxy says.....
Thanks Jim for the suggestion of an extending wheel nut bar..I know what u mean ..

Where I work at the moment is like this. People don’t share what they know about the computer system. In case somebody gets to know more than they do. It comes from being scared for their positions. But ultimately it does the company no good, as it just means the knowledge isn’t flowing. So only a few know the intricacies of the system.

You've been meeting some rather dull women I think. Who made the tanks, shells etc for both sides in the war? Women! That said, in our helicopter company, nearly all the pilots were male. Not sure why really, there is nothing physical about it. Latterly in Aberdeen we had 3 female pilots and about 40 male pilots. Much the same ratio in the engineering department. Of the 3 female pilots, one was really good and she had been the chief pilot in our Falklands operation. One was very nice but unfortunately fairly hopeless. And one spent most of her career having babies (you can’t fly once it is known you are pregnant, so she was a mighty piss-taker having 4 babies one after the other). So the full spectrum. I think it is just that women don’t particularly want those sort of jobs. In the same way that most nurses are female. Of course that is partly because they have been brought up not to consider those sort of jobs, that is their mother’s fault!

"So only a few know the intricacies of the system." Knowledge is power. And, you get to keep your job. Doesn’t really help the company though.

Who made the tanks, shells etc for both sides in the war? Women! ..and who drove them and used them in battle? Actually, I think it was WW2 which brought the genders closer together. Women can do most jobs these days, including drive tanks and fire guns. I mean, they can even play rugby now. I do think it would be nice to retain some of the traditional differences between men and women though. Like having a willy.

The fact those dickheads pull the wool over the eyes of those above them, and those above them allow it is one of life’s greater disappointments 🤦🏼♂️
