Engineers not mechanics - thick dumb arse mechanics are A different kettle of fish - you are on the receiving end as a paying punter, kris and I were talking about the problems colleagues can have on a pier to pier level rather than you being tucked up for a shit repair job on your car. Shouting from Brighton to Southend? Peerlessπ€£ Pierless? No they both have peers; in fact Brighton has two, but one is a lot sick.

You wouldn't have the time after changing your own or replacing serviceable expansion vessels. 'Serviceable'? You mean 'still working but could go at any moment'? You'd best get round to changing all your light bulbs then. .....Oh, sorry, I just remembered you already do.

The photo op was staged. It does not prove that women take an interest in servicing vehicles/machines. Women like crochet, and watching TV programmes about wedding dresses (gawd knows why). I like crochet. I do not watch much tv and certainly wouldn't waste it on wedding dresses. I also take an active interest in servicing my boat. However, I do not feel the urge to change my engine oil quite as often as some here ......... Women are versatile....we can happily get on with, what was once a blokes responsibility and also what is deemed 'feminine pursuits' Equally there are blokes that like knitting etc Nowadays the enlightened agree that women and men can just get on with tasks that in the past were gender specific. Its just the short sighted bigots that hold onto antiquated opinions of a women's role.

Good outcome, Thorne Boat Services to the rescue, the cables are heavy duty, apparently good working order, good condition, he just uncoiled them as they were jammed tight to look neat, now not so neat, but work perfectly. The control Lever was removed and cleaned, some solid grease removed, and that was the problem, so now it all works as it should. He changed the engine oil, the ATF, checked stuffing box, tightened plate, cleaned bilge pump, now fully operational, new fuel filter(also clean), and 100l of diesel, which attracted some Vat? I had a few other jobs, so a full day's work, but now ready to go for another year. PS I know the oil looked pretty clean(I flushed it a year ago), he mentioned this, but I still think it was a good idea to change it, 240 hours light work in a year. Also brought 100l diesel, and for first time ever the tank is full, I reckon it could be 140l. At my current rate of progress, enough to get me to Tewitfield as by the time the lockdown is over, I reckon the winter stoppages should be completed, so I can try the scenic route. All's well that ends well, I will need water this week, so a shuffle cruise is on the cards. Exciting! I put a full description in, as, like others, I had assumed new cables and or control, but but just proper maintenance, it's been 18 years since that control was installed, should see me out!

That (as an engineer) made me determined to date her.(glad I did) Phil

Equally there are blokes that like knitting etc When I was at sea I frequently sailed with men who knitted, did fancy sewing, rug making or other crafts.
There was one First Mate who used to make the most incredibly ornate silk macrame evening bags on the night watch. He used to have a contract with a West End boutique to supply so many a year.

I think I was born in the wrong body - I mean, a middle aged bender with no skill (or interest) in knitting or crochet ... I do like an oily engine hole however and that is not a euphemism.

Given the choice between knitting/crochet or messing about with engines..the latter wins... ATM we r fitting a small shower in the van and then solar panels to the roof...it is not without its challenges....Freya has chewed through the saw bench lead and eaten Ants wallet...

Huh, so Freya chewed through a coiled up lead, that's nothing, one of our hamsters did exactly the same with the coiled lead on our vacuume cleaner after escaping and running loose all night. She was lucky to survive the 2 sleeping dogs. Phil
