Which version of windows? 10? I've just checked mine for you. It's been trying to install a network software update on mine for weeks. This one: November 30, 2020-KB4586876 Cumulative Update Preview for .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8 for Windows 10, version 2004, Windows Server, version 2004, Windows 10, version 20H2, and Windows Server, version 20H2This is the error record. Failed to install on 30/12/2020 - 0x8024001eThere is an identical entry for every day since 23/12 Other than that, it hasn't been trying to do anything since 15/12 and up to then no problems. Windows Pro so it doesn't do all the guff or try to update it, just the security updates - recommended and it's free if you don't mine not being able to "personalise" it, or object to a very small notice in the bottom corner that appears after a few hours reminding you to register. Bill wants everyone to use windows but to blatantly give it away might invite suspicion enough to be the beginning of the end. IMO.

Apart from the monthly updates there have been two feature updates on my system 28/08/2020 update to windows 10 version 2004 02/11/2020 update to windows 19 version 20H2 I think I have only seen one major update get removed and that was a couple of years ago when MS made a booboo and had to rush out an update to cure a problem.
Might be time for a new machine 😱

Mine must have installed and then was deleted yesterday, I did the other day say yes to the upgrade clearly that was a mistake

For the last few years I've been very happy with Ubuntu (Linux). I still have Windows 7 on dual boot but rarely use it. It's open source, free and comes with free programs including a MS Office compatable suite. I don't suffer all of the update crap. . I know some people have complained that it doesn't have all the hardware drivers for printers etc, but the recent versions of Ubuntu seem to be Ok. My HP 3 way printer works fine with it along with backup drives etc. I really recommend people try it if they are getting fed up with Windows. The only real issue is that many software houses don't produce software for Linux, especially games, but if you just want a PC/laptop for Office, play music/video, internet, emai, it's fine and as I said, free. You can install it as dual boot, so you can still put up with Windows if you really want to. There is also some emulation software (WINE) which will run most Windows software if you want to remove Windows entirely. Enjoy.... ubuntu.com/

Normally all my stuff is done on Android using Tablet and Phone, I had to get the W10 machine out of the cupboard to check updates and that's it, back in the cupboard it goes. 😱

I have a chromebook, works fine, no. Waiting for updates for hours. I still need a Windows laptop for a couple of things, eg a program to tweak the electric bike. When I upgrade I'll get a chromebook capable of dual boot and Linux, which lots of chromebooks are, just that mine is an early one. I'd give WINE a try too. I have played with Linux in the past, immsmr there are some distros that will boot and run off a USB stick, Puppy Linux?

I hate computers - pre the fairground bollocks, I spent 15 years as an IT consultant and quite frankly, these days, I've forgotten more than I ever thought I'd learned. I've still got 2 laptops which I use - one for financial stuff (with my cloud ) running on windows 10 and a "play one" (website building, here/various other forums and entertainment. I switched off all updates long since on them both and periodically take a look and chose what to apply.
I much preferred XP and hung on to it for as long as I possible could.

XP was pretty good but when you think about it, does Windows 10 really do much more than Windows 95? I think it's all still based on the Win 3.1 API isn't it? I know they have added many new API's for touch screens etc, but the upgrade thing just seems like money for old rope.

Sounds like time for a new machine, mine is about 5years old and does updates in no time, mind you it does have an SSD and loads of ram. Or maybe a faster internet connection 🌚
