The average age of those who die from covid remains in excess of 80 years ... that's just how it is. To keep over 80 as the average there surely can't be many young people dying can there ? Rog No there aren't, but there are quite a lot of people 50+ who end up being very ill and in hospital. They recover eventually after having taken up a hospital bed for a long time. Or an ICU bed for a long time, which is worse. So it is not so much about how many people are dying right now, it is about what would happen if all hospital beds including ICU are full, when a 30 year old pitches up after a road accident, stabbing etc or a 50 year old with a heart attack. Once the health service becomes overwhelmed, people of all ages start dying from what should have been a totally curable condition. Yes this is what we had the Nightingale hospitals for and the question I want to ask is why aren't we using them more. I suspect the answer is that having the beds is one thing, but you also need the trained staff to look after those in the extra beds, and that I suspect is where we are lacking.
Rumour has it that they are being used but for non covid cases, thats what my mate Kay told me anyway

Im getting quite tired of seeing the same old tripe that it only affects the old and invalid anyway so they should be able to carry on. I just reply with sod em,eh. This country is just full of entitled people. I tend to think that dying is something that eightysomethings are known for doing and dying is part of the life cycle. In fact, eighty is a good innings, my Dad was born in 1920 and his life expectancy was 55 years. He ended up dying at 86. In my view, too little consideration is given to the collateral damage which will be caused by our approach to Covid. When you look at the fields full of London black cabs parked up in Epping Forest, each one is a representation of a man's livelihood, his means of paying his mortgage, his purpose of being. And looking just a little deeper, the reason they are silent and quietly rusting away is because pubs, restaurants, theatres, every place they once got their trade from is closed, and all of their staff are idle too and in many cases without any means of paying the bills. And that is just one small snapshot. The pain hasn't really kicked in yet but it will do in 2021. We have had pandemics in the past and the way we dealt with these, by sheltering the vulnerable while everyone else just got on with it was the more sensible approach. If we did it your way when would we stop when a million had died? when all the Drs and nurses were dead? when the teachers and parents were dead and the kids were killing their grandparents? The reason our losses are so low is because we have been careful without that it would be chaos! Thankfully clever people run the country

I have no argument with your post ... but mine was in response to bodger requesting coverage of 'young people' suffering . Rog

Speaking of old people I was discussing the word "git" with my girls the other day.
It prompted me to look it up on the world wide web.
"The word git first appeared in print in 1946, but is undoubtedly older. It is originally an alteration of the word get, dating back to the 14th century. A shortening of beget, get insinuates that the recipient is someone's misbegotten offspring and therefore a bastard."
The entomology is interesting but that's enough about insects !!

Nobody is invincible...but would you be prepared to die at 80 to allow thousands of younger people to enjoy life like you did? Or maybe you didn't enjoy it and want others to suffer? TBH, this is one of the reasons I question a few of those in government and SAGE who seem to have a lot of control!

I bet Theresa May is thanking her lucky stars she stood down when she did. I’m also pretty certain Jeremy Corbin is happy that Labout lost when it did!

Truth is, without an accurate crystal ball the chances of anyone getting it right handling this pandemic are none and bugger all.

Truth is, without an accurate crystal ball the chances of anyone getting it right handling this pandemic are none and bugger all. I feel we still have some control over OUR personal destiny, but I doubt it has anything to do with how much money we have. I doubt it's got anything about how much control we have over others. I suspect it all comes down to how much we love eachother.
