Now Chris has become a full time liveaboard (it did take several years but I got stronger chains!), and what with the Covid crap, it's become a bit of a pain us using her postal address
Bearing in mind we will make another attempt at the Lancaster this year, what is the best way to get post and parcels redirected?
I know there is the Poste Restante system, but is there a way you can update the delivery address say every week or two?

Will be interested to see if this is possible, I would have assumed not had you not asked the question; although one of the benefits to me in cruising is not getting any post lol. Perhaps parcels could be done when you 'choose delivery address'? I suppose it depends on whether the RM computer says yes or no. T.

You can get anything sent to any Post Office any time by Poste Restante, it's not something you have to register for or update. Small one-person Post Offices handle this better than large ones. It's generally considered polite to call in beforehand and tell them you are expecting mail and buy a few stamps or make a cash withdrawal or some other small thing that provides their income, most Postmasters/mistresses will ask for ID the first time you collect something. Post Offices near canals are generally quite clued up on Poste Restante.

I have heard that some sellers get twitchy about having things delivered to a different address to the registered (C/O) postal address, but I guess that can be dealt with by PM's on platforms like eBay etc?

Maybe, my Poste Restante address is my default ebay address and everything I buy gets sent there, I've never had a seller query it. Of course, most of the time I get it sent to the same Post Office, at Brinklow although when I'm away cruising and need it sending elsewhere I just update my ebay address. I believe some Post Offices will only accept small items, also some Post Offices will return uncollected mail after seven days which is why it's best to build a rapport in advance if possible. This is what I picked up from Brinklow Post Office yesterday, all bought on ebay. Perhaps I've had a better experience than some, Brinklow is a village with a strong canal history and everyone seems to understand liveaboard narrowboating. 1 litre 2-stroke oil. 2 spark plugs. Set of feeler gauges. Set of vice grips.

I was like "maybe they know about the knife" then I worked it out.

I was like "maybe they know about the knife" then I worked it out. As far as I'm aware, Post Offices don't actually earn anything from providing a Poste Restante service. My guess is that in an age when many smaller village Post Offices are under threat of closure, offering the service is a bargaining chip in showing value to the community.

I'm sure you are right about that.
I used Post Restante in the early days of living on a boat. It was a good system.
After that I used my sisters address which slightly ironically ended up leading to incredibly unresolvable life problems which I am still wrestling with.
Post Restante definitely a Good Thing.
As for relatives I'm like "knock knock, who's there, go fuck yourself".
Isn't it.

For parcel deliveries via eBay there seems to be this click and collect thing which looks interesting if you are near a town.
Argos (are they still about?) and some supermarkets seem to offer this option.

I have an actual address which I use for official documentation, HMRC, DVLA etc, my ex-partner's address in Ramsgate, she opens any mail that arrives for me and phones me to tell me about it. If it seems worthy of further attention she photographs the letter and sends me the image via a Facebook message. On the very rare occasion that I need the hard copy of the letter she just re-envelopes it and posts it up to the Post Office.

You are a lucky man.
Anyone who does not have to live in Ramsgate is lucky.

Yes, really bulky stuff which would take up too much space in the village Post Office I get sent to the Co-op at Long Lawford which is more-or-less on my way home from work. The only purchase neither of these options worked for was the roofing shingles for the moped shed which were both heavy (30kg, too heavy for Click and Collect) and bulky so I got my son to order them and bring them up when he next visited. But for 99% of the time the first two options work.

One of the things I found about trying go 'totally off line' is that you can't have a bank account without a 'fixed' address. I've only ever met one boater who appeared to escape the 'system' but those were in the days you could pay your boat licence in cash!
