Its a tier 4 lockdown Friday night, and as ever my thought turn to inconsequential matters.
The thing is, I've noticed that many boating types refer to boats in the female tense.
I've always known this was a thing with coastal or seagoing craft, of course, from reading dozens of novels, maritime accounts, and of course films.
But are canal boats discussed in the female tense?
Judging by the names, it seems not all of them are. Things like 'dunworkin', 'lazydays', or 'Thor' do not have a particularly female ring. But I've noticed several professionals refer to mine or others boats as female, and the first few times it slightly took me aback, even though I should have been ready for it.
I had gotten into the apparently deplorable habit of calling my boat 'it', when a guy filling up my diesel said something about 'her' having a slight list.
For a millisecond my eyes darted around us, looking for what might be a very unfortunate passing woman- and then I realised he meant my boat had a list.
I had to go along with this convention, even though it felt slightly strange way to talk about something that I had always considered a sort of floating apartment (being utterly devoid of romance as I am, and with the soul and emotions of a termite).
So I kept up with the whole nautical thing. "Yes, she does, doesn't she? She does. She has a list."
Its happened a few times since, and I just got to wondering- clearly some folks think of their boats as female, and others see them as objects- as floating accommodation.
So where, my dear folks of TB, do you sit on this scale of boats being ladies?

Our boat is all man. 58’ of pure male. Clarence, the biggest man you ever saw.

Ours is definitely male too. Apart from anything else, who would want to be discovered inside a female? We do have standards!

All the narrow boats I have owned (5 different ones) have been non gender specific. The other 2 canal boats the same although the barge is slightly effeminate.
Dulcinea is by definition a lady but an imaginary and impossibly perfect lady.

Bittern's Boom is just a boat named after the noise a bird makes.

Ah... so I'm not the only one.
Next time someone says "she has a list", I'll say "Humbug, Sir. IT has a list. It is a boat, not a woman."

Yes I bought a copy of Don Quixote recently.
It's similar to my "teach yourself weightlifting" book in that I have not been able to pick it up yet.

It's actually a lot more complicated than that. There are 78,000 pages.
ETA it's almost as challenging as my "teach yourself to be a gigolo" book.
It's really hard work.

Sabina H is sometimes a bit independently minded (polite for a bloody handfull) and resistant to being forced to go in a direction she dislikes but always a lady

As no one else has said it yet, boats must be women. They are expensive to maintain both in money and time. They have a mind of their own. On the plus side, they are mainly beautiful and give a lot of pleasure.
Tin hat ready!!!

That's a fair point.
So, what is the collection of potted plants on top of a narrow boat called then?
