I thought elsan points were being gradually phased out.
Lots of people swear by composting toilets so if it all went that way then the sanity stations would gradually become obsolete plus a reduction in residential use of boats.
Makes sense really.
And a tap app. No more free tap water you dial it up with your phone and pay per litre.
Oh dear.

I must admit, my personal experience with Elsans over the last year is literally crap. A functional Elsan point has become a rarity but we're lucky enough to have a motor carriage which can take us afar to a functional Elsan point. Having said that, I have seen shit floating in the cut as we pass some places. Of course, that will get blamed on us liveaboards. (where was that poll again..)?

(where was that poll again..)? my ditch exploring vessel (Shapfell) is very much a "child of it's time" and being 50 years old lacks some of the frills that are de rigueur nowadays. i.e. she is fitted with a porta potti and has no shower. In it's day this was fine, sanitary stations with showers were not uncommon, were usually quite clean and well maintained. many were at manned locks and were looked after very well by the lock keepers who used to do all the regular maintenance. Over the years I have been travelling the canals the standards (and the number) of both has fallen away drastically. The last time I did a long journey in Shapfell was a good few years ago and by then it was becoming a problem even with a spare cassette for the porta potti (as regards the "eau de boater" tough) It did mean that it was neccessary to go into a marina ( ) and pay for the odd hot shower I hope that things will improve so I can do another couple of trips as there are still bits of the system I have missed but I wonder how many facilities will be around by then

There seems to be a consensus emerging.

Enthusiasm for this poll seems to have waned, there is a clear opinion of those who voted. Now it has gone quiet here but seems to have caused a bit of heated discussion on CWDF, will give them something to mull over whilst they bale out from the breaches around the country, A&C, Shroppy, T&M, Macc etc.

Empty canals look a bit like brown field sites. Former industrial use.
I wonder if something could be done about the water problem so that developers can get on with building houses on the land.

Plenty of green fields in the immediate area, much more profit to be made developing them - only problem is - flooding risk from the canal...

Yes but we want to protect the green belt!
It is more environmentally sensitive to redevelop the brown belt which is land which has already been disturbed for construction purposes.
Ribbon development of solar powered eco homes combined with efficient 2WV transport infrastructure and linear parks with duck ditches is a very appropriate use considering where the funding comes from.

So what’s the conclusion of this then? Oh yes like every poll it’s served to distract from the real issues.
