Ali fancies buying a kindle type thingy. Mainly for reading books, magazines and newspapers. Any suggestions about best ones? Cheers, Ian.

I am also a member of the local library so can download books electronically and read them from anywhere in the world for free.

I know this is of little help, but this IS Thunderboat Afterall...
I've got a kindle and tbh, I don't like it - I SEE the merit in having 1000000s of books at your fingertips but you can't leave them/collect them in service blocks all around the network... I'm not an avid reader in the winter (when I should be) but DO so in summer - sitting out the back in bright light, (thus not needing reading specs on) there's a certain thrill from reading a book someone has left - wondering where it's been etc.
PRE covid, germs never entered my head... and I suppose I should give them a quick spray with dettol spray really.
Good luck adapting if you do get one though.

Get the paper light without ads, that’s it really.
I have an older touch that I use on the boat, had it near nine years now and still works like the first day.

I use small chopped up bits of pine for kindling.
As for Amazon I would not buy anything from the porn of the devil.

There is the Kindle Fire 7 for only £50, but since it was £35 over Crimbo I'm feeling a bit ripped off. The fire is not as good as the paperwhite for reading (reflective screen), but it has more use - its basically an android tablet. However it is locked in to Amazon and its services to an extent, so why bother? Buy a ordinary tablet instead.
However if you intend to read a lot, the paperwhite is much easier on the eyes. There is a waterproof version that IMO is worth paying more for. The ads are a bit crap, personally I'd pay the extra £10 for an ads-free version. The Oasis is the best yet if you feel like paying the extra, but only for the bigger screen size.

Chris swears by the Kindle Paperwhite. It works really well in bright sunlight and still has a backlight for night.

Another vote for the paper white. Both I and ‘Im Indoors has one, lovely for travelling (I know, I know) backlit for reading in bed, takes up little to no space. Also the special offers bring loads of books to my attention I would never have found in a month of browsing in a bookshop.

Paul really likes his Kindle. He offered to buy me one as a pressy a few years ago,I had to decline as I love real books! In normal times,I trawl charity shops both when boating & in the house plus,go to the library every week when at home.Had just got my library card for Ellesmere when lockdown happened again. The library are doing a click/collect service for your chosen genre, great for those who don't read much but not so good for someone like me who reads a lot !

My vote is for Paper white Kindle, Chris and I both have one each and it is almost frightening how many books we can download, titles that we have read can be stored in the cloud and I can download Chris's titles while she can do the same. My best acquisition was the complete words of Jules Verne some 20 odd books who knew he was so prolific Phil

I like actual books. The feel and heft, even the smell of them is part of the experience.

So did Chris before I persuaded her to buy the Kindle Paperlight because all of her read books were becoming unwanted ballast. Anyway, I thought we were supoosed to be saving the planet by cutting down less trees.....tut...tut...

I'm a great believer in not buying things you don't want. So if you prefer actual books then a Kindle probably isn't for you.
