Quick questionI wouldn't worry t worry...Im waiting for new hold the heat inre bricks to arrive for my stove, the top baffle plate rests on these ....its cold and so Ive lit my stove without side and baffle plate...bad idea? I realise the stove walls will get hotter but as a temporary measure Im hoping they will be okay. edit to add an hour later, Im still alive and not gassed, but as always happens the sun came out so now Im roasting...ah well! I cooked some salmon in the top oven of the stove so all is good. Unless you get it up to 1500 deg C, the melting point of cast iron, i wouldnt worry. The bricks just hold the heat in.

I don't think melting is the potential problem its more about cracking (if its made of cast iron parts) the bricks do hold the heat in but also insulate the metal castings a bit I believe.
A lot of fires are made of welded steel so it might not be a problem anyway.
I'd tend not to run a fire too much without the bricks in personally.
If its cold then you obviously have to have the fire going if its the only heating !!

Interested to know what its like for storing outside / on the roof in the bags.
I'm burning Brazier smokeless but the olive stuff definitely sounds interesting.

We have a big f'off wide stove so use house bricks to reduce the size of the fire during milder nights and pop em out for a bigger blaze when its really cold. As for coal, ordinary House Coal from B&M £2.99 for 10Kg...cant go wrong.

Tried both the smokeless £3.99 for 10kg and the housecoal.
I find the Housecoal burns much hotter and more complete whereas the smokeless doesnt burn fully down to dust but leaves plenty of clinkers so yes, the housecoal I've had no probs with especially at 3 quid a bag

Good to know if I run out, but should be okay for a while. I tend to burn house coal mixed with some wood.

I went to collect 15x10kg bags of Brazier from Home Bargains the other day and I had been intending to go to the B&M bargains next door to it for a bag of their smokeless. Shop had been rebranded as Poundland Clearance. Selling Brazier for £4 .. Interesting that it (B&M stuff) leaves clinker behind. Brazier just leaves behind the cement/ash. As someone pointed out (southernstar I think it was) its probably just the shit swept up from the refinery floor stuck together with cement. I'm going to try the olive stuff - might be possible to get it cheaper in bulk? If it stores outdoors OK.

I get their CPL coal www.coals2u.co.uk/smokeless-coal-number-5 at £9.25 a 25kg bag delivered price, and thier kiln dried logs and so far am happy. No coal boats on the Lancaster so I dont feel too guilty. They often do a reccomend on farcebook offer at £5 discount each time you do it, so its worth doing combined with summer discount prices. and a Quidco 5% cashback Whereabouts on the Lancaster are you? Dewhursts coal yard next to the canal at bridge 52 does all sorts of fuels at a decent price, and they will also deliver to the towpath.

Ahh thats a shame, I've just come through Garstang heading south (actually moored right outside the coal yard at the moment), I could have delivered some for you by boat if I was going north!

Thanks! What size and shape are they? I like big nuggets as they leave better air gaps.
