Just changed the default DNS settings on my phone from 3's DNS to Open DNS. This resulted in an increase in download speed of around 3 mbp/s (poxy) to a bit more than 10 (much better). This was achieved by simply downloading a free app called 'DNS Switch'. There are others, this was simply the first one I found that was entirely free. I hear there is a more tekky way of doing things (achieved via a process called 'rooting') - but since there is a risk of 'bricking' your device if you do this I have so far not been brave enough to try it. I imagine some of you are way ahead on this subject, any comments welcomed.

No that's DFS, which stands for "Deeply Flawed and Shoddy".

My mistake - sorry.
back to the op for a mo, back when i was doing computing for a living, open dns servers were usually quicker than the automatic ones provided by the isp so I suppose it's not really surprising... these days, my phone (which is cracked to buggary being dropped at least 10 times a day) is lucky just to work... I think I can get a new on in June without handing out any more dosh so it will soldier on until then.

What I didn't get was how to change it on a mobile phone (as opposed to a broadband router). I still don't really, the app did it for me.

I've had a few phones none of them expensive or particularly interesting but the best and one of the cheapest is the Xiaomi Redmi 7A.
Yes I know there is a Chinese machine watching me but I have such and incredibly boring life outside of work that they are welcome really.
It's a good durable reliable phone unit.
I never take it ok my SIS missions.

All your data is now being mined by the Chinese government.. True, but is that worse than an android phone with Google watching and tracking you?

All your data is now being mined by the Chinese government.. This is why I keep confusing them with random made up stuff. Keep them on their toes.

Before I started using Google maps I had a Garmin Nuvi stand alone GPS. One day I discovered that it kept a previous track of where you had been. A private detective's dream I don't know if you could delete it or how it was stored.

They all track you, watch you, listen to you.. Part of the new world so best to just embrace it, unless you are a knife wielding, lorry driving, yorkie chomping, moped riding, hair dying, blow up doll loving, coffin living, polish beer drinking, laptop killing person with night time activities to hide that is.
