All this stuff has been said before. One narcissist is criticised and all of a sudden its the end of the world. The times they are changing...
This is the foreword from the first collected edition of 'V For Vendetta' - (the comic where all the latter-day anarchists get the Guy Fawkes mask from).
I began V For Vendetta in the summer of 1981, during a working holiday upon the Isle of Wight. My youngest daughter, Amber, was a few months old. I finished it in the late winter of 1988, after a gap in publishing of nearly five years from discontinuation of England’s Warrior magazine, its initial home. Amber is now seven. I don’t know why I mentioned that. It’s just one of those unremarkable facts that strike you suddenly, with unexpected force, so that you have to go and sit down.
Along with Marvelman (now Miracleman), V For Vendetta represents my first attempt at a continuing series, begun at the outset of my career. For this reason, amongst others, there are things that ring oddly in earlier episodes when judged in the light of the strip’s later development. I trust you’ll bear with us during any initial clumsiness, and share our opinion that it was for the best to show the early episodes unrevised, warts and all, rather than go back and eradicate all trace of youthful creative inexperience. There is also a certain amount of political inexperience upon my part evident in these early episodes. Back in 1981 the term “nuclear winter” had not passed into common currency, and although my guess about climatic upheaval came pretty close to the eventual truth of the situation, the fact remains that the story to hand suggests that a nuclear war, even a limited one, might be survivable. To the best of my current knowledge, this is not the case.
Naivete can also be detected in my supposition that it would take something as melodramatic as a near-miss nuclear conflict to nudge England toward fascism. Although in fairness to myself and David, there were no better or more accurate predictions of our country’s future available in comic form at that time. The simple fact that much of the historical background of the story proceeds from a predicted Conservative defeat in the 1982 General Election should tell you how reliable we were in our role as Cassandras.
It’s 1988 now. Margaret Thatcher is entering her third term of office and talking confidently of an unbroken Conservative leadership well into the next century. My youngest daughter is seven and the tabloid press are circulating the idea of concentration camps for persons with AIDS. The new riot police wear black visors, as do their horses, and their vans have rotating video cameras mounted on top. The government has expressed a desire to eradicate homosexuality, even as an abstract concept, and one can only speculate as to which minority will be the next legislated against. I’m thinking of taking my family and getting out of this country soon, sometime over the next couple of years. It’s cold and it’s mean-spirited and I don’t like it here anymore.
Goodnight England. Goodnight Home Services and V for Victory. Hello the voice of Fate (London) and V For Vendetta.
~ Alan Moore — Northampton, March 1988

The sun still rises and sets and little changes ... not even man's conceit in believing we are in charge Rog

Has this to say this morning: " Accused of killing a man I've never metOn Monday I once again had followers mysteriously cancelled on my Twitter account. On Tuesday I was censored. On Wednesday I was denounced in The Guardian. On Thursday I was accused of helping to kill a man I had never even met (I'll come back to this). And on Friday I was attacked and abused in the Left-wing New Statesman. I was also denounced on a website associated with the vice-chairman of the Conservative Party, so effectively an arm of government. Paradoxically, the website – which claimed my words endangered public health – is partly run by a man who spends much of his time defending cigarette companies. This is normal life now for any dissenter from the official view of the lockdown – abuse, accusations and smears. The censorship was a mysterious cut in the recorded version of a weekly conversation I have each Monday on Talk Radio with presenter Mike Graham. Mr Graham had nothing to do with it. But Talk Radio recently ran into trouble with the pro-lockdown internet monster YouTube, which provides a platform for its recorded material. My guess is that someone at Talk Radio, worried that YouTube might attack again, cut out some rude words I said about government propaganda (the whole episode is described on the Peter Hitchens blog). This is what censorship does. It makes people cut their own stuff, so the censors don't have to. But the worst was the suggestion that I should be counted as responsible for a poor man who had died, in Shrewsbury, after testing positive for Covid-19. The claim was that he had liked some of my tweets, and as a result, had ignored precautions against the virus and so died. I'll leave it to you to judge the strength of that. Furious screeching internet warriors, who remind me strongly of the Red Guards who denounced and attacked Mao's enemies in 1960s China, demanded I should confess my guilt and express public shame. Normally, this sort of thing would be easily dismissed. But in the current atmosphere, I am not so sure. With every day that passes, this country grows darker and narrower, and more like the places I used to visit in my foreign correspondent days, secure in the knowledge I could fly home to freedom, law and calm. Believe me. I have seen a lot of tyrannies and we are turning, bit by bit, into such a place." His brother Chris was a grand chap, wonder what went wrong with Peter?

I too believe that there is an agenda at play here above and beyond dealing with a virus which has claimed the lives of around 1 in 800 of the population, the vast majority of whom were in their 80s. Certainly as far as I'm aware there has never been a previous occasion when perfectly healthy people were required to quarantine. There is largely a slavish, sheep-like deference to The Powers That Be which has caused many folk to lose all sense of proportion. Far, far more lives will be lost in the long-term due to lockdown than will be saved by it.

A comment which somehow affected me regarding the deaths ....was by a nurse who said that she had never in all her years in the NHS seen as many people in ITU all dying the same way That fact brought home the awfulness of this virus.....

Patty its pointless, Vince had his cruising plans ruined last year by something that really is killing people before their time! Its also stopped the NHS working and is putting their lives in danger saving people [yes even stupid ones that dont believe the virus is serious] Its looking like this year he might get a cruise, as long as enough people get vaccinated and the death rate seemingly stuck at 1200ish a day eventually drops to something more like normal. I am happy to except an extension of the lockdown if it saves people, some on here wont I am afraid

it is utterly amazing how many (otherwise intelligent ?? ) folk are taken in by all this conspiracy crapola.
I can only conclude it is the result of subscribing to soshulmeedya platforms (which I avoid like the plague).
increasingly I find that the only consistent voice of common sense is Patty's - somehow she appears not to be taken in by the crap and presents a common-sense and sympathetic attitude that is in stark contrast to those who would try to generate sensationalism and excitement from the rather sad situation we find ourselves in these days.

Oh... and here we go, just appeared: "and that even in a best-case scenario lockdown would have to be kept in place until June to prevent another significant spike in deaths." "Social distancing may remain in place ALL YEAR: Graphs show how UK could see huge spike in deaths if restrictions are lifted too early as vaccine would have to be 85% effective to stop a surge in fatalities" I suspected this would be announced. For me it's a minor irritant but at least I can carry on working, and as all of my major bills fall due in the Winter it just means that my savings will increase at a faster rate. But can you imagine what this news must be like to anyone who owns a bar or bistro, or maybe a narrowboat hire company? Personally I don't think lockdown will ever be lifted. There will always be some "new variant" to extend it and many will applaud these measures, just as the Russian peasants used to come out of their wooden huts to cheer and wave their flags as Stalin's motorcade swept by.

I understand lockdown,of course I do.What I don't like are the continued radio indoctrination adverts.I also do not like the written adverts at my local Tesco-'You must shop alone'- more aggressive than the government adverts saying you should shop alone.I do adhere to these, but do feel like wearing a mask on my cheeky bits(Tesco don't specify where to wear your mask)plus stickers on my a**e stating ELF-Ellesmere Liberation Front!!!😁

We shop separately, but at the same time, in the supermarkets that tell us we should be alone. This allows us to flirt with each other.. quite sexy and gives us a laugh.
