I worked at Canal & River Trust full-time for more than 8 years
Pros
Great, helpful and Knowledgeable local teams
Cons
The CEO and Directors haven't got a clue how to successfully run a business. Have completely lost touch with the reality of keeping 2000 miles of canals well maintained and navigable. Spend all their time chasing government funding and trying to tick every PC box you can think of. Whilst gradually eroding the pay and benefits of loyal hard working staff. Bonus scheme only pays out to CEO and Directors. Pension scheme closed Company cars removed Local offices closed and your base moved to well over 100 mile round trip, extra travelling time and associated costs to be funded out of your own pocket. Overtime rates cut Holiday entitlement, Sick Pay, Banked holidays all being reduced in the next round. No pay rise in 2020 despite the sterling work if the local teams in trying times. Thank you award scheme removed

I have been working at Canal & River Trust full-time for more than 10 years
Pros
Some beautiful locations. Some staff are the best you will ever work with.
Cons
Having worked here since 2009 I have seen a significant change in personnel over recent years. There is a bully culture that has emerged as managers are put under more pressure to deliver works they dont have the resource to deliver. The friends I have seen stand up to the bullying have been paid off and sent packing. The latest presentation was based on "If you dont like it, get off the bus" The directors clearly dont like each other and the CEO has lost the senior management team.
It all started so well with company values and signing to anti disability, Wellbeing, anti bullying campaigns. However when you dig a little further it isnt hard to see that this is only on the surface and really the senior management teams really dont care for any of it.
- Not enough Money
- Not enough Staff
- Bullying is rife
- Accidents on the increase

Advice to Management
Take a long hard look at what you are telling us to deliver and decide if this is just a job or something you really believe in.
Believe in the company Values of Caring, Open, Local, Involved, Excellence.
You cant have local in regional and national teams. It is not caring when someone voices a constructive opinion and they are dismissed. It's not Open to act like this and.you will never achieve Excellance with this culture”
