Well it couldn’t could it?
For a start, everybody was promised a different personalised version of Brexit. A huge number voted for a hard out, an even bigger number were promised being in the single market but leaving the EU, and we were all promised that everything would be the same, that it would be fast and easy and it would all be better.
Then we we were promised more control, and sovereignty. Nobody defined what sovereignty meant, or is, or how it worked. Nobody told us who was taking back control, from who, to do what. Cummings who invented the slogan, wanted to take it back from the UK civil service and give it to his “nerds”.
Then those that wanted “foreigners out” never defined which foreigners. Nobody voted to decimate the NHS, stop touring musicians, and bring in more Chinese from Hong Kong instead. The streets are still full of brown people. The real racists are still seeing black people on TV.
“Take back our borders” end freedom of movement, nobody thought that would mean restrictions on us, we only meant to end freedom for foreigners. Now we have to queue and people traffickers and refugee exploiters get even more trade.
“Cut red tape” that went well, nobody expected it to mean a huge increase in red white and blue British paperwork on a huge scale. Nobody expected to pay customs and VAT on items brought on eBay.
“The EU is collapsing and we need to get out”, it very obviously isn’t. It’s still there, it surrounds us on all sides, it protects itself and is as hard as nails in doing so.
“We can become global Britain”. We always were, as part of the EU with its external trade agreements. Now we have to scurry about trying to duplicate whatever we had within the EU. Which means largely complying to the EU agreements and regulations for imports, nobody wants to make goods for a tiny UK market with different specifications and standards.
The EU now has non tariff barriers against us due to the crap deal Boris invented. The USA under Biden won’t deal with Boris before it deals with the EU, and then won’t if we upset Ireland. Then we can’t do deals with China if it annoys the USA. Those are the three biggest trading blocs in the world. Where most of our trade comes and goes.
“Get Brexit done” well it obviously hasn’t been and can’t be, because until we have all the things we lost, nobody will be happy.
Nor is it practically working well, because it can’t. There is no way that leaving a framework designed to make everything easier, could make everything easier. Brexit is just hard, and relentless and nobody will do us any favours. We did it to ourselves.
