I’m extremely careful on the internet with my privacy, but in this day and age, it’s becoming a battle to have any sure fire way of holding back the constant barrage of crap. I recently created email addys for specific purposes in order to ascertain the biggest culprits of abuse. Low and behold, the one I use specifically for CRT has been a moderate culprit for drawing in crap. It’s all very well stating they can share our details with third parties, but we seem to have lost control over what third parties they use. This recent boaters survey has seen them provide some of our personal information to an outsourced company yet again, and I’ve no doubt that information will be shared to other companies in due course.
Under most circumstances, if I see “we may share your information”, I walk away, or refuse permission, but what pisses me off with the Trust is the fact that they are attempting to include this in the licence conditions, which obviously has implications for our control of privacy. Anyway, I initially asked my local mp for advice on the matter, and he rather helpfully suggested talking to the Trust 🙄. Obviously that would be a waste of time, so I’ve written to the ICO office asking their advice. I was surprised to receive a reply from them yesterday asking if I would be interested in supplying them with the spam etc I’m receiving directly associated with the email addys I'm using.
So watch this space. I will update as and when.

Good that ICO is taking an interest. I’ve done something recently, don’t know what but my virgin.net account (which i generally keep for dealing with companies etc) has seen a massive increase in spam this last couple of weeks, nearly all telling me that my (various types of) computer anti-virus software has expired and I need to sign up to renew it. I’m probably getting at least 10 a day.

So watch this space. I will update as and when. Good luck. I had to escalate a complaint to the Data Protection Council (DPC) when I deleted my Facebook account years ago, as I still kept getting emails from them . Complaining to Facebook was a waste of time. Unsubscribing didn't work either. On that occasion the complaint seemed to work. I also got the impression from the DPC, that lots of people had moaned about the same problem. It's better to at least try to do something about it, rather than just moan about it on a forum...isn't it? The more I think about it, the more I think the guy in the boat next to me is right. The internet is the problem. Well, to be fair, some people's abuse of the internet. I suppose we all still have the option to switch it off...well until we get the brain implants....

Interesting, I have several Gmail e-mail addresses and suffer from very little spam, none in my inbox and only a few a month in my spam folders mostly in Spanish or Portuguese, I can't tell the difference. The email I use for junk registrations has none, can't work that out at all. However despite still being registered with cart I have no dealings with them so have never seen any obvious spam from that connection. That is not to say it doesn't happen just that I am lucky 😎

My virgin account has also been filled recently with anti virus warnings (and multiple Bitcoin missives) whereas my other account hasn't. Maybe more to do with Virgin, as my 'companies' account is not with them.

The huge amount of data we share with third parties shouldn’t be something to loose sleep over - if. you are worried about the man knowing you like boats and how often you buy baked beans you are probably doing OK 👍🍻

I’m extremely careful on the internet with my privacy, I find that an interesting comment given people know your name and the name of your boat and the general area you hang around in. All because of online presence. nothing wrong with it, no point hiding but it seems odd that this would be described as being extremely careful with privacy.

People only know the name I give, (which is not my birth name). Nobody can access my phone number, address or other personal information from internet searches. My emails are private and not used on the internet publicly.

You'd be surprised at the size of the file we hold on him.
It won't even fit in a match box.
